Anyone had a diagnosis after precancerous growth removed from bowel?

4.5 years ago I was having terrible issues with my bowels. My GP shrugged it off, despite me advising them, and showing them a picture of something coming out of my rectum. I had no choice but to go private at that point and he examined me and contacted a consultant at the NHS to see me. Within 2 week I was in having a growth the size of a golf ball removed from my rectal area. It turned out to be pre cancerous.

My half sister has just been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. And I think the shock of that is giving me anxiety about my bowels again. I'm due a check up in January.

I was just wondering if it's inevitable that the same thing could happen again? Or if anyone has had similar and the  went on to develop cancer?

I'm probably just over thinking but I have a wee boy now and the worry kept me up lastnight.

  • Hi Val85,

I can imagine it really hit you hard when your half sister was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer - I am sorry to hear this and as you said, the shock of the news is understandably triggering anxiety about your own cancer fears. But the great thing is you had these rectal issues examined and the growth removed and even if it turned out to be pre-cancerous, you will now be regularly monitored and this will help make sure that any changes you might notice for example can be promptly dealt with. Having a check up in January will also help to keep track of how things are progressing and allow you to be reassured hopefully that everything is ok. If you notice any new symptoms, do talk to your GP about it before you have your January appointment.

I hope you will hear from others here who have had something similar and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
