chest x-ray - how long does it take for GP to get the results?

Hello Everyone Just received my letter for a chest xray came really quick less than a week! worried me a little to be honest but I wanted to ask how long does it take for gp to get results if the xray too place say Thursday morning?Do you hear sooner if there's an abnormality? Suffer with health anxiety therefore struggling with the waiting. Appreciate and guidance  thank you

  • I was told 2-3 weeks but had a phone call 3 days later to arrange for a ct scan in 10 days time. The GP was given the results of the x-ray at the same time as my phone call. The ct scan showed a benign calcified lesion in the right lung so there was nothing to worry about.

Yes. I had an x-ray on a Wednesday and a telephone call the following Monday morning. At first I thought it was a scam call because I was not expecting any problem with the lung. I had had a fleeting chest pain near the left breast but as I have severe fibromyalgia I thought it was ribcage inflammation (costochondritis) which is commonly found with fibromyalgia. The GP thought I had angina and had put me on a betablocker and prescribed a small dose of aspirin. Asking me to go for an x-ray was a bit of an afterthought. Luckily a lesion was found, which incidentally the ct scan revealed was benign but, of greater importance, an abnormality in the breast was also detected which turned out to be breast cancer.I have had an operation and treatment for this and am now recovering well.

Waiting for a result will make you anxious but I am sure if there is a need for further investigation you will be informed pretty promptly.Try not to worry - easier said than done -but as in my case the lesion proved to be harmless.

  • I had a chest x-ray one day 2 days later the results were there on my online NHS app  mine was all clear although I've got a nasty bug /infection that I've been taking antibiotics for for over 3 weeks .

  • Thank you for the replies.  I presume if it was serious you would hear sooner

  • I don't know mine came back very quickly and it was all clear ,I hardly dared open the result because it was so quick I was shaking but when I read normal I just read it over and over again I was so relieved because the Doc was going to send me for a CT  scan but there was no need .

The severity of the findings, or lack thereof, rarely plays a part in when you get the results or when the results are in. There's many people here who were diagnosed with cancer that literally had to wait weeks. Some longer. My wife had to wait around 3+ weeks and she had cancer. There's also a fair few folk on here that got their results within a day or 3 and everything was fine.

I'm not saying some gps won't contact you if there's an issue, but many people have to wait the allotted time. I get you're freaked out by this, but a common myth surrounding cancer diagnoses is the amount of time it takes people to get back to you. It's the same if consultants want to meet you face to face to give results. Some will give results over the phone, whilst a fair few will still want to have a face to face meeting.

It really boils down to your own surgery and the local hospital/health centre. Some are stowed out, some are quite quick.

Hello I got my chest xray results all normal thankfully but now I've noticed a grape like lump on my right ribcage at the bottam seems to be never ending stress! Will need to go to the gp Monday and I'm aware it be a month of ultrasounds and biopsy really difficult to manage with my extensive health anxiey feeling very sad right now I'm hoping its just a lipoma or something.  I don't know if the chest xray would of picked it up as it does look at the rib cage feeling very upset and unable to think straight.  I even thought about paying to see a private gp this weekend because the anxiety is so bad
