Worried about lymphoma

Hi there,

I'm a 27 year old female and I have had a lump in my neck for over six months now. It's painless and moveable when you touch it. I don't know if I'm imagining it or not, but I think it's gone from the size of a pea to a baked bean. I have been to the doctor several times for it and have had blood tests twice. All the bloods were normal white cells etc. He said on paper I appear to be healthy. The doctor also said that the size of the lump isn't concerning.

I told the doctor that I've also been experiencing night sweats. He told me he would refer me to the haematology department, but that they might not accept the referral due to the bloods being normal.

I just have a really bad feeling about this as I've read on the internet that it is abnormal to have an enlarged lymph node for a prolonged period of time.

If the haematology department reject the referral, I'm considering going private to have it biopsied (although this isn't a great option because I'm sure it will be very expensive).

Should I really be concerned about this, or just trust the doctor's decision? I'm just worried that if I leave it be and it turns out to be something malignant, I will be in a much worse position.

Thank you.

  • Hello olk123

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing health concerns about a lump in your neck recently. It's good to hear that the blood tests you've had done haven't given your GP any cause for concern but I can understand why you are still feeling anxious about this.

Sometimes people do have raised lymph nodes that don't go back down after the initial swelling. Unfortunately, we also know that a lot of what can be found on the internet causes people to be more worried about their symptoms so please try to avoid searching for answers online. The only way to get a firm diagnosis, and hopefully some reassurance, is to talk with a doctor so do make another appointment with your GP if you're worried.

If you would like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to offer any information and reassurance they can.

I hope that you have some answers soon.

    Best wishes,
