Cell Changes

Hi all,

Not really sure where to start, I had a colposcopy today due to unexplained vaginal bleeding (this has been on and off for around 2 years but had really picked up last couple of months) we believed this was due to me being on blood thinners (have been around 3 years) but GP wanted it looked into to be safe.

Before colposcopy nurse explained most likely to be blood thinners or polyps (or similar) but during procedure she struggled to keep my cervix in view but once she did said there was definitely signs of cell changes - Id had smear last year that was negative and so she said likely that its either developed since then or its low grade that's always been there as smear only pick up high grade.

She wanted to do biopsy but due to being on blood thinners she was reluctant inside they couldn't stop bleeding, so said would discuss with colleagues and get in touch with me to either come back in stopping blood thinners beforehand or they may be able to inject with something to counteract blood thinners

So currently in limbo waiting for next step and find out what's what - I know there are different types and grades etc and they'll determine treatment etc but can anyone help with protocol etc of what happens next etc?

Thank you

  • Hello Pingu16

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been told you have some cell changes following a colposcopy appointment. It's understandable that you have some questions and concerns particularly as the investigations have had to be delayed whilst the team discusses the best way forward.

We do have some information on our website about abnormal cervical cells that you may find helpful but if you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can.

I hope that the team is able to give you some answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,
