Endometrial thickness of 24mm with a polyp and an ovarian cyst

Hi everyone,

I am coming on here due to me massively overthinking and worrying about my current situation.

I am 39 with 3 children. Been struggling with painful periods for the last 3-4 years.

I had a scan 3 years ago which showed a polyp, I had a biopsy at that time but found it incredibly uncomfortable so was advised to have a GA Hysteroscopy, I then was discharged as my BMI was raised so they wouldn’t do it under general.

My periods have been horrendous for the last 6-9 months, I am now getting pelvic pain, back pain and have been bloated and nauseous. So I went to GP and had an urgent scan organized.
I got the results the same day, a grossly thickened endometrium with a 2.4cm polyp and a Haemorrhagic ovarian cysts

any advice would be appreciated xx

  • Hi Loup,

It sounds like you have had a hard time in the last 9 months with these horrendous periods, getting pelvic pain, black pain as well as feeling bloated and nauseous. You did well to go to the GP especially as you have been struggling with painful periods for so many years. It's good your GP took things seriously and had an urgent scan organised and it's great that results came through the same day and you didn't have to wait. It's easy as you say to overthink and worry when you don't yet have all the answers and when you haven't yet spoken to a specialist about what these results actually mean. I hope that you will find out more soon and that they can explain things to you and it isn't anything concerning. It's tempting when faced with all the medical jargon from medical reports to look things up on Google to try and find meaning or a definition of these terms but this usually gives you no clarity and will only make you worry.  If you've been tempted to do this (and we all do it!!), try and resist the urge and give your GP a call instead and see whether they can explain to you what it all means. Waiting for a diagnosis can be nerve racking and I would suggest you have a look at our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news.

Hopefully you will hear from other members of our community who have been told they had endometrial thickness and ovarian cysts  - and there are quite a few on our forum who have been in a similar place so hopefully they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Loup,

I just wondered how you were getting on and what was the outcome of your tests.  I just got told today I have endo 24mm thickness and cysts on one ovary and am thinking the worst of course.

Would be good to hear how you got on.  Sorry I know this was over a year ago.

  • Hey new to this group just seen your message and understood was 11months ago.But I'm going through the same thing at moment .Horrific periods for years lower back pain cramping had ultrasound sound shows cysts on both ovaries and they are bulky also a womb lining thickness of 24mm would love to know the outcome and reassurance ,as I'm worried sick I'm 37 years old have 1 beautiful girl who is 10 now through IVF and I can't sleep and I'm soo scared as iv been neglected for a while now and to hear this just over thinking the worst. Been referred back to gynaecology as an urgent so it's all a waiting game now

  • Hiya, do you have any other symptoms?  My main symptom was bleeding and discharge every single day in between periods.  It did end up being cancer for me unfortunately which originated in my womb and then spread to my ovaries and lining of my bladder. I didn't act on my symptoms for months.  However, to reassure you, within a month of my diagnosis in Sept 25 I had a radical hysterectomy, this was followed chemo and radiation and I am now through the other side with clear scans.  I know the fear you are going through, I'm 44 and have one little boy who is 5.  We do tend to think the worst but whatever the outcome of your tests it will be fine, there's so much they can do.  I'm no expert but if you've had problems in this area with conceiving and bad periods over the years it's probably more related to that rather than cancer.  Please let me know how you get on though and I'm happy to answer any questions. x

  • I'm so sorry to hear you had the C ,I'm thankful you have had a positive outcome and hope your doing well.Thank you for replying to me .I have pickish discharge at times ,bleeding maybe twice in 1 month total of 10 days that made me anemic. Its the womb thickening for me 24mm same as yours and cysts .

I pray its not and I'm thankful for your reply did you wait long to see gynaecology? I'm on urgent referral now as stated on my scan abnormal findings .Unfortunately you can't help but think the worst x

  • It's a bit of a long story but I was on HRT at the time of getting my symptoms.  Because of this, when my doctor referred me for the urgent suspected cancer following my ultrasound,  the hospital didn't think it was appropriate and took me off this list and referred me to outpatient hysteroscopy instead so my timeline will be different to yours for initial appointments.  Apparently lots of women on HRT have thickened wombs.  Call up the hospital you have been referred to and chase up your appointment, this is what I did and that's how I found out I'd been taken off the list.  You should get an appointment within a month and then once they have a look and take any samples, this can take another 2 weeks to get results.  Don't be afraid to ring up and chase people.  I did this a lot lol.  This period of wanting to know and waiting for results is the worst but just trust that whatever the outcome it will be treatable. x
