Leukemia symptoms in children

Hi

I just looking for so advice my daughter started getting pains in her stomach on n off for about 3 months we thought it was down to her diet maybe she has allergy etc I took her to doctor she had bloods tests stool sample and they all came back normal, we wrote a food diary to find out what she was eating and when her belly pain happened there was no pattern, 3 weeks ago we was told by 111 to go to hospital as her stomach pains was getting worse and they said they think it might be appendicitis we got to hospital they did a urine sample and it had high number of white blood cells in it so they put it down to urine infection I wasn't convinced it was this so they took some bloods her results came back that her white blood cell count was really low they put her on antibiotics and admitted us to children ward they ruled out appendicitis they said her lymph nodes was swollen in her belly and neck so they put it down to virual infection, we went for ultrasound scan next day where they said her spleen was slightly swollen they also repeated blood test her white blood cells had come up but not alot and her palalets count was down now they send her blood cultures off but they came back negative, they stopped antibiotics and put it down to virual infection bearing in mind she had no symptoms of infection or anything anywhere, we got discharged from hospital reapeted bloods in weeks time all them bloodscame back normal, but yesterday she took another funny turn was sick and keeps complaining of stomach pain on left side under ribs I thought maybe she's picked up a tummy bug or because it was so hot yesterday could have been the heat she's been so very tired and not her normal self for a while now she's not eating something is just niggling at me something is not right I did say to the consultant about leukemia but because she was not showing signs of aniema or had mouth sores ect they didn't think it was that, the more I read up about it the more worried I am I think because they was no real explanation for why her white blood cells was low I'm over thinking things

Just wondering what symptoms your child showed ect if it was on n off symptoms how poorly they actually was and if I should get a second opinion because something isn't right

Thanks

  • Hi Bella2567,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has been struggling with this - I can understand this must be a worry, especially if it feels you're not getting answers.

I'm not sure if you are waiting on any more appointments or results, but if not and the issues are continuing, and/or you have any continued concerns or questions, then the best thing is to speak to your doctor again. If you don't feel comfortable seeing the same doctor, you can of course ask for a second opinion from a different doctor.

I hope you're able to find out more and get some reassurance soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • My son has has Leukaemia for a second time. Id like to say that if your child had leukaemia then the bloods wouldn't return to normal, white blood cells lower after infection. Leukaemic cells keep multiplying until no good cells are left so they dont go back to normal after if that makes sense. If in doubt however always get a second opinion. X
