Throat pain on one side - could it be cancer?

Hi everyone,

I've been dealing with persistent throat pain on the left side for a couple of weeks now. It feels like there's a lump or something stuck in the back of my throat, making swallowing uncomfortable. At times, the pain seems to shift towards the middle. Despite taking paracetamol or ibuprofen, the discomfort lingers. It's a sensation I've never experienced before.

Before this, I had a persistent, harsh cough for about 4-5 weeks, which my GP attributed to a viral infection, possibly whooping cough. Last year, I underwent surgery to close a fistula in my gum linked to my sinus, resulting in ongoing pain in my left sinus area. I initially thought the throat pain might be connected to the aftermath of the surgery and the persistent post-nasal drip.

Concerned, I visited my GP again. He couldn't find anything upon examination but prescribed antibiotics for potential sinusitis and referred me for an x-ray and to an ENT specialist.

My anxiety skyrocketed when I checked the NHS app and saw "urgent suspected cancer" associated with my referral. The shock of seeing "cancer" next to my name has been devastating. Since then, I've struggled to sleep, and I've developed a low-grade fever (37.5°C) and pain under my armpits. I'm uncertain if these symptoms stem from anxiety or an underlying illness.

I've read many similar stories on forums, but few mention their eventual diagnosis, leaving me feeling more anxious and uncertain. I'm trying to stay rational amidst this fear.

I'm a 34-year-old woman, a former social smoker who hasn't smoked in years.

If anyone has gone through something similar, I'd appreciate hearing about your experience and how you managed the anxiety while waiting for further tests. Any advice or support would mean a lot to me right now.

Thank you.

  • Hi Paulina

First of all dont panic by the 'suspected cancer referral' note on your nhs notes, the doctor has to put that for you to be seen on the 2 week pathway, otherwise you would probably be waiting 6 months to be seen.  Yes, cancer is one possibility, but it is way down a list of possible diagnoses, however it is naturally the one that needs to be ruled out quickest.

I have been referred to ENT twice in the last 4 years with 'suspected cancer', I had a persistant cough, sore throat and feeling like I had a lump in my throat.  On both occasions my symptoms were due to silent acid reflux.  I didnt feel like I had indigestion or heartburn, but I did.

Try to stay calm, by getting yourself worked up your body then manifests all if these other symptoms that are due to stress.  Do not under any circumstances use google to look it up, you will only scare yourself.

All you can do is wait for your appointment, keep yourself busy and remember, in most cases, it turns out to be sonething other than cancer!

    Best wishes

  • Hi Annie,

Thank you so much for your reassuring words. It's comforting to hear that you've been through similar experiences and that it turned out to be something manageable.

The waiting for the tests is indeed the hardest part right now. I have an x-ray scheduled for Wednesday, but I haven't received an appointment from the ENT yet.

The idea that it could be silent acid reflux makes a lot of sense, especially since the antibiotics haven't made a difference.

I'll try to stay calm and keep myself busy, as you suggested. It's good to be reminded not to rely on Google for answers—it really does make the anxiety worse, especially when you read about similar experiences and never hear the outcome :(

Thanks again for sharing your experience and advice. It means a lot! <3

    Best wishes,
    Paulina
