Scared: scan last week revealed my lining is too thick at 11mm

Hi, I am 47, and had a 3 day scant bleed after about 2 years of no periods, I have had a scan last week and lining is 11mm and have been told that it’s too thick. I had a horrible phone call from GP surgery, where I was they can’t rule out cancer and have to be seen under the 2 week rule. The previous week I was told there was nothing sinister. I am petrified, I have other complex medical conditions and I am finding it hard to cope. I ended up in a and E on Tuesday with a horrendous asthma attack  I know was caused by anxiety. It spoke with another GP yesterday who said that it can’t be ruled out that is cancer but due to ongoing meds, he thinks there may well be another cause. I am petrified and so so anxious I haven’t heard about appointment and am just driving myself mad, reading everything possible and making myself more and more worried. I don’t know if I am post menopausal or not last year I had fish 9 now it’s 20 I haven’t bled for a while but this has happened all throughout my adulthood I have had years without bleeds and I thought it was because I had pcos but apparently  I don’t have it, I am so so scared. I am overweight, and haven’t had children so am at risk.

  • Hello Honeybubbles,

It's completely understandable you are feeling scared and anxious at the moment as you are waiting to have these investigations and the GP you have talked to have said they can't rule out cancer but try if you can not to look anything up online as this will inevitably bring up the most unlikely and most worrying possibilities and make you anticipate the worst. As your GP pointed out, even though they have to be thorough and can't rule out cancer, there may well be other causes too and therefore it is important to investigate this properly.

All you can do really at the moment is wait and this is often described here as the hardest thing and I thought I would share with you our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for news. I hope that these tips will help you keep strong in the coming days and weeks as you are waiting for tests and important results.

I will now let others who have been in a similar place come and say hello and share their experiences with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,
