Lump at base of throat

Hi all,

Ive been referred for an urgent ultrasound with possible biopsy for a lump at the base of my neck/throat, following my blood test results. I have hypothyroidism with no issues like this before but I can’t help but worry. My GP has been reassuring and explained that they have to consider cancer due to the blood results and nature of the lump, but could also be nothing serious.

I guess I’m posting on here as  am so busy reassuring my friends and family that it isn’t anything to worry about and that I am fine, that I’m not having time to admit that I am scared senseless that it is serious.

My scan is the 12th August and that seems like a lifetime away, how has everyone else coped with the waiting?

Thanks for reading

  • Hi TinaAD14,

This must be a rather anxious time for you as you are waiting to be seen and for this possible biopsy. I can imagine the 12th of August seems like a long way away and every single day until then may feel like a rather long wait having to live with uncertainty. It's good you have a GP who is reassuring and that they are being thorough. It's normal to worry though and you have come to the right place to find comfort and reassurance from others who have had similar lumps at the base of their throat and who will understand what you are going through. As you say, when going through health investigations, we often try to reassure our loved ones to protect them from unnecessary worry and it's very nice of you to try and reassure them but here on the forum you will meet others who will have some kind words for you and will be happy to share their own similar experiences.

There is no one magic recipe for coping with what can often feel like an endless wait and what works for one person may not work for another - I hope that you will find a strategy that works for you. One suggestion everyone here will agree with is to keep well away from the temptation to look anything up on Google as this will inevitably increase your anxiety without providing any reliable answers. We have these helpful tips too to help you coping while waiting for important news which I hope you will find useful.

Best wishes and best of luck for your scan - everything crossed for you!
