I wanted to write a post as I recently suffered a bout of ill health which resulted in a colonoscopy. While waiting I scoured the internet and wanted to share to hopefully provide so comfort to others.
I suffer with IBS and anxiety. I had my first child a year ago and returned to work when he was 7montrhs old. My job is really stressful at times and I’m still trying to find a good balance between work and home.
I went to my GP to talk about a change in my bowel habits. I found over a period of 6 weeks at the time of my appt, I had a more urgent need to go and it was a different consistency to my normal. I was going on holiday without my son so we discussed the possibility of anxiety around that. My gp did full bloods and two stool samples - one to detect infection and one for calprotectin levels. All came back fine, some findings in bloods but nothing significant
They ordered a FIT test for me and I took that a few weeks ago. 6 days later I had a call from my surgery requesting I attend an urgent appointment the next day to discuss my results. I was absolutely terrified. My mind went to the worst case and I suddenly felt every symptom going. I had a positive FIT test and the GP referred me for a Colonoscopy and talked me through all the possibilities.
The wait was awful, the prep just as bad.
I had my procedure today and am pleased to say they found nothing sinister, a small polyp only that they removed.
I wanted to share my story incase there is anyone else worrying about the procedure. It’s not that bad - I did opt for sedation though! And the nurses are all very kind and caring.
