Very high calprotectin but normal colonoscopy

Hi everybody. I’m just looking for some advice please. I have had ongoing upper abdominal discomfort and passing large amounts of mucus when I go to the toilet. Every week or so this alternates with diarrhoea.

My faecal calprotectin  level was 4818! I was sent for an urgent colonoscopy which has come back as normal. I’m just wondering whatthe next steps might be as my symptoms have returned immediately after the scope.

My stools are mixed with mucus all the time and I have abdominal discomfort all the time. Should I be pushing for more tests? Like a gastroscopy or pill cam?

  • Hello Nikkid1975,

I am sorry to hear about these symptoms you have been experiencing which surely have been rather uncomfortable and unpleasant for you. The high calprotectin level must have worried you too and it's good that the doctor took this seriously and you were sent for an urgent colonoscopy. It's extremely reassuring though that the colonoscopy has come back as normal as this will have ruled out many serious conditions. However, given that your symptoms are still there I can understand why you might want to find solutions to deal with these symptoms. I would perhaps give your GP a call so that you can have a follow up after your colonoscopy. You can discuss all your results this way, the fact that your colonoscopy was normal but that your symptoms are persisting and you suffer from abdominal discomfort all the time and stools mixed with mucus. Your GP will I am sure be able to tell you more about what may be causing these issues and they will be in the best position to advise as to whether additional tests might be needed or if that is not necessary given you have had a normal colonoscopy recently. So simply give your GP a call so that you can get the reassurance and clarity you need on this.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our forum who have had similar symptoms and that they will be along shortly to share their experiences with you.

    Best wishes,
