possible melanoma

hi i am just after some advice really i have a mole that i am under investigation for possible melanoma and im just trying to get my head around it i am constantly checking my nhs app to see if an appointment has appeared as i have been referred for biopsy 10 days ago but heard nothing since, its more my family i am worried about rather than me or a diagnosis if that makes sense.

  • Did you get a referral letter from your GP? I received one a couple of days after my referral for a number to ring if I'd not been contacted forcan appointment after a week.

  • i have had referral from dr to diagnostic screening and they took close up pictures which were then sent to dermatology who contacted me via my nhs app for an appointment, i had said app with dermatologist 10 day ago who said i was being referred for biopsy and handed me a leaflet about what to expect but havent heard anything since.

i have a number i can contact but i know the lady who is my cancer coordinator so feel a little awkward approaching her

  • Hi I was referred in April for suspected melanoma (turned out to be basal cell carcinoma) I received my appointment letter 2 days later and the appointment 14 days from the date of the letter.  Perhaps ring the GP to chase this with them. Do you know if they did the two week pathway?  It is a tough time the waiting doesnt help. I hope you get the appointment sorted soon. xx

  • hi yes im on the 2 week pathway so there is still time i guess but this is the longest ive waited between apps, im away this weekend and back next tuesday so if i havent heard by then i will contact them. after your diagnosis did you get any further appointments or have a pathway you are now on or have you been totally discharged ?

  • Yes good idea to contact them once your back hopefully you hear from them soon.  So they removed my mole and had a letter confirming they successfully removed all the cancer so they have discharged me.  I do now have a new mole growing near my incision site that appeared a few weeks ago so will be going back to GP about that. I believe as it was basal cell they don't generally offer further follow ups every 6 months but they do if it is melanoma but I may be wrong.

  • Yes I will give it till Tuesday and take it from there. I know nothing about the different types of cancer to be honest it’s all quite mind boggling and to just see my name associated with it on letters etc is quite daunting but again I feel ok about it if that makes sense maybe I’m kidding myself or maybe I’m coping better than I thought I would I dunno.
yes definitely get back to gp asap to have the new growth checked . I do find myself googling a hell of a lot trying to find answers but I know that dr google isnt always my best friend .

can i ask your previous biopsy was it all classic signs of melanoma as in the abode scale ? Yet it turned out to be bcc ?

  • I understand how you feel when the GP said melanoma I was pretty OK about it but when I got my appointment letter and saw it in writing it knocked me a bit to be honest and for a few days I did not cope very well at all. It's a very bizarre time and DR Google does not make things any better.  If it helps at all when I first saw my dermatologist and mentioned what I had read online she did say that not everything on Google is correct and that treatment they offer for skin cancer has moved forward massively.  So I went to the GP as my mole was bleeding, the shape was irregular, irregular colour and it had got bigger and darker over about a year and a half so ticked a few of the boxes. But yes the dermatologist was very surprised she said she was expecting a melanoma but she believed it to be BCC which the biopsy later confirmed.

  • yeah i think deep down its knocked me more than im admitting i know as i am binge eating with the stress that a big red flag to me for stress.

i have all the classis signs new mole noticed last christmas then had changed and grew to over 1cm in last 5 months or so has irregular edges a dark black centre and like a grey hue to it it does itch but not bled to my knowledge as its on my back.

  • Mine did itch as well, i'm sure it has knocked you a bit it is always a shock, its a lot to play on your mind. Try to keep busy and don't let Google worry you as only the dermatologist can really confirm. I wish you all the best and please let me know how you get on! if you need to chat or vent to me then please do as I really understand how you are feeling.  And enjoy your weekend away :)

  • thank you its been so lovely to talk to someone who actually knows what im going through as my husband doesnt really want to talk about he just keeps saying youll be fine, but hes not a man of many words when it comes to things like this he bottles things up and then my eldest daughter is doing the same googling and i keep telling her im ok to stop worrying but i know she cant stop. and then my mum hasnt spoken about it with me she herself had breast cancer 10 years ago so im sure she thinks ill be fine if she fought that off.

please letme know also how you get on with your gp ! :)
