passed around

Hi all

I had a painful hip back in early March, and a day or two later, I discovered a lump nearby; I attended A and E as the hip was so painful, and an ultrasound was done two days later.

The lump was measured etc, and as it was inconclusive, the GP was told to send me back in 12 weeks. In the meantime, I arranged a private MRI, as the lump, about 6 weeks in, was double in size. A biopsy was recommended.

I've spent the past month trying to get the GP to do something; in that month, I've gained an awful skin issue/odd spots in the skin above the lump (the lump is deep).

The hospital arranged a new ultrasound appointment for this Monday despite the GP sending an MRI report recommending a biopsy and Doppler investigation.

My GP finally saw me last Monday and did an urgent referral after seeing the lump and skin above the lump to the cancer centre; the staff have booked me for a few weeks.

Is this all normal? A growing inconclusive lump was ignored for three months, and hospitals ignored requests for a biopsy and then panicked GP urgent referral to the specialist cancer hospital - who I am hoping will do a biopsy (would they do this in an initial appointment?).

I think ill still attend the (local) hospital on Monday for the ultrasound, but I know I'll have difficulty not getting distressed.

  • Hi Louidenise,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear you've been having to wait a while to get appointments sorted for this.

It's difficult to advise on what exactly is normal, as it often depends on waiting lists and also referrals and what is suggested for a course of action. It may be that the original recommendation was not deemed urgent and so you hadn't had an appointment booked. Getting the urgent referral sped things up and created a quicker target for you to be seen in.

Hopefully it's not long to wait for that appointment. You can always call the hospital to check for cancellations and to ask to hear of any cancellations that may allow you to be seen sooner, if this is appropriate for you.

As I say, I hope you hear more soon, and in the meantime hopefully you'll get some more replies to your post.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
