Large liver lesion discovered on ultrasound

Hi, after a bit of advice from anyone that may have been in a similar position to me.

I had blood tests done towards the end of last year due to on going acid reflux symptoms.  In the last 6 months I have been on the cancer pathway for investigations for throat and stomach, all biopsies came back clear thank god.

However, when my bloods were taken, all of my readings were within normal range, except my ALP liver enzyme.  It wasnt very high only 139, when outside range is 120.  The doctor was a comparing it to a reading that was taken 5 years ago of 72, so was wondering why it had gone up.  Decided to test again after a month, when I had not had the health supplements that I regularly took.  That time it had dropped slightly to, 137.  Was happy to give it another check in 4 months, still off supplements, it had then gone up to 139 again.  They took further bloods to see if the increase was coming from liver or bones, seemed to be liver.

Referred me for ultrasound on routine referral, got seen within 5 weeks, they found a 10cm x 5cm lesion on my liver.  I then got referred for urgent ct scan which I had a week ago, just been told that they want an mri done urgently to get more details.  I wasnt too worried initially as I know that primary liver cancer is unusual in a 55 year old, unless underlying liver disease is there.  But getting a little bit concerned now.

I guess I am hoping for reassurance that being referred for mri scan also happens for benign lesions too?

Also, I have no symptoms at all, other than acid reflux (biopsies came back clear following endoscopy) and all bloods consistantly within range other than ALP.

  • Findings on the liver are common, and most turn out to be absolutely nothing. Saying that, if they aren't 100% sure, they're doing the correct thing and seeking further tests. The last thing they want is to send you away with no answers. So yeah, it does happen.

  • Thanks for the reply.  I am being seen at the liver clinic next thursday even though results of mri wont be back yet, so I will hopefully get some more idea then.  Just trying not to let the nerves get to me.  Also having to hide all of these tests from my elderly father, he lost my sister 15 years ago and my mum 18 months ago to breast cancer.  I am all he has got left!

But hey, I will get my positive head back on and wait for next week.

  • Hi Annie, any follow up ? I am also 55, also have found a lesion on my liver 4 weeks after a CT scan [which was requested 11 months ago ?! after i had protracted side pain. It went away somewhat and i forgot about it as an ultrasound had shown nothing. ] now they cant figure out what it is as i have no other symptoms aside fro side pain. All they seem to be sure of is it isnt a "simple cyst" it is 4 x 3 x 1.5cm, so not large not small, and doesnt SEEM to have been there this time last year. [ps- i am in Canada, so my wait times are likely different from yours!]

  • Hi

Sorry, I didnt see this notification, I replied on the other thread that you posted on.

Mine turned out to be an Adenoma, which is a benign tumour.  Due to the size and location of it (it was close to the main artery into my liver), they decided that it needed to be removed, without risking a biopsy before surgery (it still was not clear after the MRI scan whether it was benign or malignant).  So I had a wedge liver resection in early August to remove the tumour and part of my liver with it.

I hope that you get your MRI soon and get the answers that you need.

    Regards

    Annie

  • Hi Annie! I replied on the other thread. Thanks for getting back to me, these threads really do help to know there are so many options that speculating does no good. However advocating for yourself and having a support structure does!
