Ca 125 blood test raised. Worried sick

I had awful pain in my lower abdomen, to which the nurse practitioner thought it would be a cyst on my ovary that's burst.

She did a ca 125 blood test. Which can he used to check for cervical cancer.

It has come back raised. She said don't go off thinking the worst & if it was a cyst then this would make the test results high.

She has sent for an urgent ultrasound. I am now worried sick. I haven't eaten in 6 days. Can't sleep.

How do you not go off thinking the worst.

  • Hello Jad1311

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some symptoms that led you to see the nurse practitioner at your GP surgery. It's good to hear that they've already done some initial tests and that you've now been referred for some more investigations.

We know that many women feel worried about a raised CA125 but it's really important to remember that there are a number of conditions other than cancer that can cause a raised result such as endometriosis, pregnancy, fibroids, and even the point you are at in your menstrual cycle. So please try to keep this in mind.

We know that waiting for tests and results can be a worrying time. You may find it helpful to give our nurses a call next week and talk through your concerns with them. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your scan and the results will bring some reassurance.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jad1311, it’s human nature when faced with uncertainty to think the worst, well it is for me anyway.  I’m a ten year breast cancer survivor and would only say try to remain calm and talk to the nurses on here who can help keep some perspective during assessment and waiting for results, they are great to talk to over your fears. . I've wasted a lot of energy getting overly anxious while waiting for test results over the years. Ever since chemo my ca125 has been elevated, had lots of checks been put down to fibroids. Best of luck x

  • Hello, thank you so much for your message. I found it extremely reassuring. I finally got my appointment for 4 weeks time, even though the Dr's thought it would be done within 2 weeks.

So just waiting now, but trying not to let my mind wander.

Thank you so much again x

  • Hi Jean,

Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate it.

I have been trying to stop myself thinking the worst after looking into the ca 125 blood test a bit more.

Being a nurse myself makes it harder I think, when you see it from the opposite end at work.

4 weeks until my appointment. It's a horrible wait
