Mole on lower back changed shape and size

I have a mole on my lower back. I can't remember exactly how long it's been there, but certainly over 10 years (I'm 28). It was always oval, dark brown and slightly raised.

I wear high waisted trousers/ jeans a lot, and over the years it has sometimes bled, I assumed it was because of the clothes I was wearing always catching it.

Last year after having my daughter, my boyfriend pointed out it looked different. The mole itself is a lot smaller, but the border is the same size. So it is now essentially a small lump in the middle of a brown patch, rather than just a raised mole that it was before.

Is this reason for concern? I'm terrified of it being cancer, but I need a push to have it checked.

  • Hi Erinelizabeth,

I can understand your anxiety but it's better to get it checked out now - if it's innocent, you won't continue to worry - if it's something that needs treatment, the quicker it's found the better.

Moles can change & new ones appear during pregnancy due to hormones, most changes are found to be fine so there is good chance yours will be fine, but go see your GP and let them check it out. If they decide to refer you to see a dermatologist don't panic - 75% of patients referred to dermatology are given a clean bill of health.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
