Waiting on results

Hi all, I'm feeling very lonely right now and looking for anyone with similar experiences to mine.

I've had severe GERD symptoms for the past 8+ years to the point I get woken in the night choking on regurgitation. I've tried to manage the reflux with over the counter antacids for years, unsuccessfully.

This wasn't the reason I got my GP appt, it was actually  due to a chronic persistant cough, nighttime wheezing and shortness if breath but when I mentioned the pain I have swallowing foods, they sent me for an urgent Gastroscopy.

Following the procedure, the consultant told me I had a hiatial hernia, oesophagitis and there were no visible signs of cancer. They had taken 4 biopsies (I heard the term Barretts mentioned while I was sedated but he didn't say anything about this to me directly)

This was over 4 weeks ago and I'm still anxiously waiting for the results.

I guess I'm driving myself crazy wondering what the purpose of the biopsies were..... could there still be a cancer diagnosis looming or is it standard procedure?

Has anyone  been removed from fast track only to have a positive biopsy come back?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi

I had had this procedure done a couple of months ago, after 15 years of suffering with Gerd symptoms.  I was also on the fast track 2 week service but it still took 6 weeks for my biopsy results to be returned.  They told me on the day that they didnt think that there was anything wrong (other than hernia), but they took biopsies from a polyp in my stomach and osophageus just to double check.  I think that in alot of cases they can see if its cancer and they do seem to tell people there and then that they can expect a diagnoses.

I also was worried about Barretts as I have suffered for so long on and off, I was convinced that I would have it.  Whilst I was worried, I tried to reassure myself that only a small precentage of people that have it, go onto develop cancer.  But the good thing is that you get regular endoscopies that would pick up cell changes early, unlike alot of people that never know it is developing.  I am at higher risk of breast cancer due to family risk, so have yearly check ups, this is the way that I cope with it in my head, that if the worst happens, it will hopefully be picked up early.

I hope that you get your results soon, they sent my results through to the gp and I had to chase them up.  It might pay for you to ring your gp just to check.

    Good luck

    Annie

  • Hi have you had a barium meal test, I was in omeprozole for 30+ years when a Dr decided I needed to stop immediately, I went through severe heartburn and reflux for around 2 years, had the colonscopy test and biopsies all clear, I had the barium meal test and at first it looked as if nothing was wrong after rewatching in slow motion it was found I had a issue in the osphegus treatment was/is antidepressants for life to keep it relaxed. Within a few months I was fine and have been since. Good luck to you hope you get to the bottom of it.
