Thyroid nodule

Hi my daughter had an ultrasound today on her thyroid. She has a nodule on her thyroid which us 1cm. The docter did a biopsy on the nodule and we are anxious about tje results.  The doctor said the nodule is grade 3 but still needs to be tested as there were some parts of the nodule that were irregular. Has anyone else had a nodule graded at 3.

  • Hello Gold

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has recently had an appointment regarding some concerns about her thyroid. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about this.

We often get people posting here on the forum who have had a biopsy on a thyroid nodule and sometimes the initial results are inconclusive and further testing is needed. Even then, sometimes the specialists are not able to make a firm diagnosis, and partial removal of the thyroid is recommended. You can read more about tests for thyroid cancer on our website.  For now, try not to worry too much about what the results may be as this will leave you all feeling more worried.

You may find it helpful to chat things through with one of our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can as well as help you think about some of the questions you might want to ask the care team. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your daughter doesn't have to wait too long for more information and the team can offer you all some reassurance about the results.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi thanks for your reply. My daughters biopsy results came back as Thy3f and bow she's been referred for a partial removal of her thyroid.  The surgeon said that she has 25% chance of it being malignant so they have to take the nodule out and the surrounding tissue to test it further. This way they can get an accurate diagnosis. We are so upset about this and finding it very difficult to enjoy normal things. My daughter has been put on a two week pathway and we are finding it very overwhelming. I just don't know how to remain positive and I am so scared.

  • Please try not to worry too much. I know that is easier said than done though.

For one thing, there is stil a 75% chance that it is not cancer.

And for another, even if it is, well, it probably just means removing the rest of her thyroid and maybe some lymph nodes if there is spread to those. I assume your daughter is probably fairly young...say under 50? In which case, the survival rate is close to 100% for the most common forms of thyroid cancer. You probably already know that, but just in case. And there isn't usually any ongoing treatment.

I had thyroid cancer in 2019/2020. I had my thyroid removed on the 6th of January 2020 and was back at work a month later. And I've had no real problems since.

  • Thankyou for your reply, my daughter is only 25 years old. You have made me feel better with your positive feedback. I think we got so overwhelmed by the results and a kind of panick has set in. It is really helpful reading about your experience with thyroid cancer.

Please can you help I'm so upset. My daughter's partial thyroidectomy results came back and she's been diagnosed with papillary cancer of the thyroid. She has to have her whole thyroid taken out next Monday. We are devastated and so worried. I need to try and get myself together so I can be strong for my daughter but I just feel so upset about it all and shocked.

  • I'm sorry to hear that. It's very likely that the operation next Monday will remove the cancer and...that will be the worst over. I woke up from my operation to the surgeon saying, "we got it all."

Any operation is worrying and cancer even more so, but well, when I was diagnosed, the endocrinologist said, "ah, it's not the worst situation in the world." The survival rate for younger people is over 99% and it rarely requires any ongoing treatment. She might have to have radio-iodine treatment, but that's just swallowing a tablet and only a once-off. It's annoying as you have to be in isolation after it and stuff, but it doesn't make you sick or weaken your immune system or anything.

  • Thankyou for your reply. It is reassuring and helpful to read about your experience. When I read what you wrote ot doesn't sound so scary.

    Hi Gold

I’m so sorry to read this. My son is 19 and we have had an ultrasound come back with  U3 and U4 nodules. I’m absolutely beside myself so I sympathise with what you’re going through. Xx

Thanks Emily4. I hope your son is OK. Is your son having anymore tests. Did he have a biopsy on these nodules?
