Scared to Death - Endoscopy

Dear Friends,

I am writing in sone much distress and bad feeling.
I insisted that my husband does an endoscopy and Colonoscopy check after I noticed that he has been having rectal bleading every now and then to ensure he does not have an issue just to be proactive!

They performed both and we were surprised that they did collect biopsy from Antrum and body of the stomach although he didn't seem to have any remarkable or visible abnormality! They also found a polyp and removed it.

Please forgive as I may sound stupid to many of you but although the biopsy result came apparantly clear we both have panicked as we did not expect that remove part of stomach. We always here that there is a huge risk associated with biopsy of organs specially stomach and there is high chance of getting cancer as a result of that. He is furious that why he agreed to do that and I am feeling horrible that I suggested it. He does not trust the medical system and his depression has gotten worse.

I have no one in the world but my husband and my 5 years old daughter.

Please share your thoughts and tell me if you had ever dealth with similar situation. How likely is it that he develops stomach cancer as the result of stomach biopsy he had?

Why do doctor unnecessarily put lives at risk without asking us prior to procedure that they would take biopsy even if there was not abnormalities?!? is that a common practice?

How can we prevent cancer now that he has been somewhat hurt.

Many thanks

  • Hi Meriana1 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear about the symptoms your husband has been contending with and the worry you now have about the biopsies that were taken during these procedures.

As you have quite a few questions about this, I would recommend giving our team of cancer nurses a call as they are very well informed in this area. If you're like to speak with them, they are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very easy to talk to and will do all they can to address your concerns and hopefully put your mind at ease.

A lot of our members have had these procedures so hopefully you will get to hear about their experiences soon, and receive some support and advice from them as well.

In the meantime, our thoughts are with you and we'll have our fingers crossed the biopsy results bring good news when they come through.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
