Really Worried - Possible Skin Cancer

I attended a GP appt on Monday 20.5.24 as I had a spot on my cheek that was a little crusty and has been there for almost a year now, maybe longer.

She looked at it and said she couldn't see anything alarming or anything serious that was jumping out at her, but asked me to go back and have some photos taken two days later.

I did that, and the day after, I looked to see what she had written on my notes. It said:

History: attends for review of lesion on face.
Examination: approx 2-3mm diameter, regular border, light brownish colour, uniform, looks like possible early seb keratosis lesion but difficult to tell, has lot of thread veins on cheek so ?could be BCC as well.
Plan: check dermatoscope and review.
happy for me to message if normal.
if any other concern can refer.

I was alarmed when I read those notes, just before going to sleep!

She rang me back the day after I had the photos taken and again told me over the phone that she wasn't concerned, however the images weren't really clear enough for her to be sure, so she would do a referral to

dermatology and that it would be done under the two week referral for suspected skin cancer. (I work in a surgery, so know about these.)

I looked again in my records today and this is what she wrote this time:

History: called re dermatoscope pics.
don't think i can confidently say is AK.
happy for me to refer on to derm 2WW
aware they may be able to review from pics and call her.

Which of the following apply

Please tick

You are suspicious of a diagnosis of Melanoma

You are suspicious of a diagnosis of SCC          X

You are suspicious of BCC please refer to Priderm, unless it is obstructing vision or airway

and to my dismay, she has ticked suspected SCC!! She didn't mention this once to me. I am so worried and can't stop feeling nauseous, thinking I now have a serious skin cancer! What if I've left it too late???

  • Hi Sally just giving you a hug , I'm in the same boat waiting for referral, seen my gp on 9/5 for a spot on my forearm, thinks could be a benign Keratoacanthoma but impossible to tell without biopsy , my health trust is showing a 10 week wait for red flag referral !

  • Thank you so much for replying. I hope you get a good result. The wait is awful isn’t it!

  •  yes can you only see your GP report because you work in surgery? I've read the hospital can downgrade a red flag referral which is bothering me, my friend has been waiting 2 years for a dermatology referral for suspect spot on her face , she went private just before Christmas has had her biopsy and further excision and was given all clear ironically she got an automated text from health trust last week saying she was still on list but they were unable to offer apt yet!

  • Hi, don't know if this helps but I've been reffered under the 2ww for suspected melanoma. However, I know full well the nurse practitioner who referred me doesn't actual suspect I have melanoma but given the location of the mole (sole of foot) it's a suspicious area. I also had the mole scanned at Boots and the consultant who reviewed it also didn't suspect melanoma but still marked it as suspicious due to it's location and recommended removal and biopsy.

The dermatologist at my appointment said it was presently atypical and agreed to remove. So, I think your GP is very much erring on the side of caution. She has to tick either melanoma or SCC to get you seen on the 2ww. She's not the expert so wants to be on the safe side and get you seen to sooner rather than later.

  • Hi

No, anyone can see their full GP record nowadays. Your surgery needs to enable access and then you can view everything if you download the NHS App. if your surgery has an IT system called SystmOne, you can also register to do everything online like order prescriptions, make appointments etc.  One of the GPs at the surgery where I work said that they don't do 2 week referrals for BCCs now, only if it's SCC or melanomas. Glad your friend got the all clear, It's such a worrying time.

  • Hello Postewriter. I'm hoping that's the case with me. If the GP isn't sure, of course they need to have it checked further. I felt quite reassured when she told me twice that she didn't think there looked to be anything to worry about and the signs were all ok, like shape, border etc. I'm hoping that she has ticked SCC only because she knows I'll hopefully get seen sooner.

  • Not sure my GP has this system I'm in NI but will try and find out x

  • That's encouraging x GP did say because mine grew so fast it could just be a benign keratoacanthoma, which is only thing stopping me going into melt down

  • Ah! I’m not sure about there, sorry

  • Hi Sally 45,

I know it's worrying to see that 'suspected SCC' has been ticked but, as others have said, it's the only way your GP could get you seen under the 2WW rule. I'm actually glad to see your GP has done this because she has been very proactive - sadly many GP's aren't & sometimes miss something that should have been referred urgently. Hopefully your lesion won't be SCC & it can be treated quickly & successfully. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
