Called for a second breast biopsy and terrified

Just looking for advice/reassurance. I found a lump in my boob (my boobs are lumpy all over really). Managed to see a consultant last week at the breast clinic.   I had my first mammogram and ultrasound, and they said they think it’s a fibroadenoma…. Took biopsies…. And they called me yesterday to say it’s ‘normal breast tissue’

But, the consultant told me that apparently the pathologist normally says what a lump is eg cyst fibroadenoma etc… and they didn’t in my case. So when the consultant team asked the pathologist what the lump was, and why was it in normal tissue, the pathologist couldn’t answer.

So they’ve asked me back for another biopsy to be sure.

Now I’m totally terrified - because  why would I need another one if it’s not bad! I keep overthinking whether or not my breast is different, whether the biopsy has made something worse because it’s still really painful.

I’ve not seen anything online about needing a second biopsy unless they are still suspicious.

Ive got to wait for the bruising to go down from my original biopsy before going back again. So I’m now waiting for another appointment.

Do you have any experience with this ? Is this normal? I can’t help but think the worst.

  • Hello Stefjay

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had concerns about your breast health and that you're now waiting for a second biopsy. It's really positive to hear that nothing of immediate concern was noted in the initial results and it sounds like the Consultant is being very thorough in trying to get clear answers regarding this lump.

It's understandable that you're feeling anxious and worried about things. We know that for many people, waiting for tests and results can be a difficult time. It can often help to talk with someone about how you're feeling and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice information and support they can. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for the next appointment and the results will enable the breast team to give you some clear answers and closure on this issue. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
