Mole checked and came away being told it’s cancer

Sitting here this morning still in shook . I’m have a number of moles and get them checked regular ly if see anything of concern. Had two removed previously not cancerous . Had to delay the check on this one as just recently had a hysterectomy but went yesterday to be told straight away needs removing cancerous and will need two surgeries. Now waiting on urgent appointment my heads working overtime with allsorts of thought but I’m trying to stay positive.

  • Hi,

Was this your GP or a dermatologist that examined you & said this? Did they use a dermascope? Is the next appointment for the actual removal? I hate it when doctors say 'It's cancerous' before it's even had a biopsy because only a biopsy can 100% diagnose melanoma. Many moles are found to be atypical (dysplastic) which means they are precancerous - they look ugly & possibly malignant and they need removing but they are not melanoma. Only a small percentage of moles removed are melanoma so there is still a chance yours will be fine. Try not to stress until you know more. Good luck,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • They contacted me this morning as had a cancellation they’ve now removed it and I have to wait 4 weeks for results and next steps etc

  • It was the hospital who advised of it being melanoma when they looked at it yesterday they’ve removed today as they had a cancellation and I now have to wait 4 weeks which they confirm if another surgery required / treatment etc . Just hoping I’ve caught it early enough .

  • It's good to hear they've removed it so quickly. Fingers crossed it's not malignant but if it is, I'm sure you're in good hands. Please let us know how you get on x
