It is today eight weeks since my first appointment with GP for suspected squamous cell carcinoma. (That changed from being a seven week wait to next day when I sent a photo of the lump.)
I managed the four and a half weeks to seeing the GP specialist who did an excision/biopsy. And was told to expect two weeks for the histology result. At the start of the session the doctor had said he thought it might be just a scab. Then that he thought it probably wasn't. Followed by implying he thought it was cancerous.
I managed the ten days to the stitch removal.
I managed the next two weeks (so now almost four weeks since biopsy).
The fact that it is over a week past the original expected time is raising anxiety to the stratosphere. And I'm no longer managing.
In Wales we have (officially) a 62-day "Suspected cancer pathway: guidelines (WHC/2024/07)" - which talks about First Definitive Treatment (FDT) stopping the suspected cancer pathway. And I am struggling to understand.
93. FDT is defined as the start of the initial intervention (treatment) aimed at removing or
eradicating the patient’s cancer completely or reducing tumour bulk and stabilising
their symptoms. FDT stops the suspected cancer pathway.
How can a suspected cancer pathway stop before they know if it is cancer? But I can't read it as meaning anything else!
If 62-days does apply, just one week to go, or they'll miss that!
I'm also getting an increase in discomfort/pain from the area underneath/behind the excision location. No hint of infection - looks OK. But since stitch removal it has been deteriorating. However, I really don't see what anyone can do until the result comes back.
I'm well aware there are many waiting much longer for results and treatment. And that targets are being missed all over the place. But I need to ask to get things sorted in my own head.
