Referral to breast clinic

Hello,

This probably seems silly but I saw my GP yesterday due to a change in one breast (historically I'm 38 and I breastfed both my children and I've also had tubal ligation which I know should reduce BC isk) I wasn't really too worried until I received the referral notice in the post today with a leaflet about urgent suspected cancer referral and not sure if this is standard. I have a thickening in upper left quadrant of one breast which the doctor confirmed. Like a long kidney shape that fits in my hand. No other breast symptoms.

After reading the cause of thickening it shows up with invasive lobular carcinoma. But all of the info I've found shows that it is a very hard cancer to detect on scans and often gets missed.

So my question is, I turn up for my appointment and get the breast ultrasound, they see nothing due to the type of cells and tell me that they can't see anything on the scan and send me away telling me not to worry.

Are they likely to do further tests If the ultrasound doesn't show anything? Can I request further tests/mri/biopsy etc or do I leave it to them? It's not as common a BC as others so do I trust that they'll know if more tests are needed etc. I know this is a completely fictitious scenario at the minute as I havnt been seen but it's really worrying me that something might be missed. :/

Many thanks in advance for any info/advice :)

  • HI farmer1985,

I can understand your concerns and questions about this. As a general rule, they will do everything they need to do to get the answers they (and you) need, including further tests if this is required or if there is uncertainty.

However, for further reassurance, it might be worth discussing this at the start of your appointment, so that you can raise your concerns and hopefully get some understanding of the process.

I hope that it's not long for you to wait for your appointment.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
