Suspected skin cancer

Hi, wondering if anyone can give an insight into the process of all this.
I went to my GP on the 9th of February 2024 they referred me suspected skin cancer on the 19th of February. I had my biopsy on the 25th of March and still to this date now the 3rd of May, still waiting to find out if I have skin cancer or not.

I’ve heard about the new 28 day  FDS but in what way does this work??
Since my referral I’ve now been waiting 74 days! I am on the urgent pathway as well. Is it normal for it to take nearly 3 months?? Just seems so cruel to be waiting since February for an answer

  • Hey, I also went to my GP on the 9th February! Referred as urgent 2ww and I only just had my lesion removed on Thursday (2nd May). They sent the biopsy off as urgent and said I should hear from them in the next 4 weeks but the consultant said they normally get in touch sooner if there is something wrong.

  • Hi,

Sadly the NHS can't keep up to the new FDS as it has a great shortage of histologists and dermatologists. A 6 to 8 week wait appears to be the current norm for receiving biopsy results, especially for melanoma. It certainly is cruel to have to wait this long and it appears to be a lottery - some hospital trusts have worse waiting times than others I'm afraid. There have been several posts in this forum recently regarding the length of time results are taking and I can't see it improving any time soon.

I hope you aren't waiting much longer & the results bring you good news. Please let us know how you get on.

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thankyou for your reply. I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and I hope you’re currently as well as you can be.
They asked me if I have any family members with melanoma and I told them yes, only one that I know of but he passed away as it was very advanced. I’m assuming they’re testing me for this because they didn’t mention any other type of skin cancer. I had a dysplastic nevus removed in 2017 which I was also told increases my risk of potentially developing melanoma.
I’m really hoping within the next 2 weeks I’ll recover my result.
it’s complete mental torture these waiting times, it really is.
although because I am on the urgent pathway, I do appreciate the fact that I have probably received surgery quicker than people who are on the non urgent pathway. I feel for them too because if the wait is this long for urgent, i can’t begin to imagine how long it is for non urgent as well
