Flexi sigmoidoscopy - sharing my experience

I had a flexible sigmoidoscopy and I wanted to come on and give my experience of it as some people don’t come back and say.

I was extremely nervous for the procedure as I’d read different chats/forums about it on Google. I know I shouldn’t have but couldn’t help it!

The hospital sent me an enema out prior to going to hospital which was very easy to do. You have it 1 hour before leaving home. I arrived at the hospital, put on some shorts and gown and was taken in. You don’t have the option of sedation for this procedure but can have gas and air if needed. Consultant examines backpassage first and then inserts the tube. I experienced no pain at all. Even when they filled with air/water I felt hardly anything. It felt like a bit of tummy ache when it was moving round and a bit uncomfortable but not half as bad as what I thought it would be. There was one point where the consultant said it may be uncomfortable going round this corner and to have some gas and air but I honestly didn’t feel anything. I also watched it on the screen which was really interesting!

I just wanted to let anyone know who may be due the procedure that it really is nothing to worry about. It was over and done with in 15 minutes.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of having a flexi sigmoidoscopy with us Anxious30.

I'm really glad it went well and I'm sure your insight will really help others who are waiting to have this done and may be feeling quite anxious about it.

I'm not sure from your post if you have had your results from this procedure yet, but if you have, I hope you received good news.

    Kind regards,
