Waiting for throat/vocal chord biopsy

I recently attended ENT for investigation as I've been feeling like something is stuck in my throat. The nasoendoscopy showed a couple of abnormalities and the doc said that though he wasn't unduly worried and may be something caused by smoking (gave up a few weeks ago) I should have a biopsy done to make sure. I was to receive a call last week with a date for the biopsy, but all I got was a message from my gp saying that ENT had ordered a prescription for Omeprazole. I have no idea why. No date yet for biopsy. Anyone experienced similar?

  • Hi HezzyT

They may have prescribed you Omeprazole if they think that you may be suffering from acid reflux, which can cause a feeling like having a lump in your throat.  Long term acid reflux can also cause damage to the throat and vocal cords too, so I would imagine that they are starting you on that whilst you are waiting for your biopsy.  I was advised be the consultant to take my Omeprazole up to bed with me and to take it with water as soon as I woke up, it must definately be taken at least 30 mins before eating of drinking anything other than water.

I hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about.

  • Hi Annie, thank you for your reply. I did wonder about that but I don't suffer from heartburn or anything. However something acidy must have been seen and fingers crossed that's all it is.

Thanks again and wishing you well

  • I first went to ENT about 4 years ago with problems swallowing and a feeling of a lump in my throat, I also had the camera up the nose and down to the vocal cords, they didnt take any biopsies from me but they could see redness from acid at night.  I also didnt have any classic symptoms like heartburn as such, they call it silent Lrp i think.

Fingers crossed that is all it is, I hope that you get your date for the biopsy soon, unfortunately you will then have another wait for the results then.  I had an endoscopy on the 5th April and I am still waiting for the results of 2 biopsies that they took during the procedure.

Like you, my consultant said that she wasnt too concerned about the areas that were biopsied, they just looked slightly different, so I am hoping that is the case and trying not too worry about it!

  • Your symptoms do sound much like mine. I hope you get good results back soon from your biopsies. Waiting is horrible isn't it? Fingers crossed for you and thanks again for the info. You have made me worry less!
