Skin changes

Hi I’ve noticed a reddish/brown mark on my left arm, it’s been there for about 8 weeks now and it’s getting a bit bigger about 1/2 inch I would think. Now I’ve got a similar one on my right arm, not as big but similar. Is it any cause for concern or do I just keep my eye on it. I am 79 and apart from feeling a little tired, which is unusual, I’m in good health. Thank you.

  • Hi Scaley,

I can understand your worry, however there are many easily treatable skin conditions we get as we get older. As you have the patches on each arm it doesn't sound like anything serious & will probably be some form of eczema or dermatitis. Have you changed your washing powder, bath soap or moisturising cream recently? I suggest you see your local pharmacist who is trained in skin complaints & they should be able to allay your worry and provide you with a topical cream to use. If they think it's anything serious (such as basal cell carcinoma - a form of skin cancer which is caused by sun damage & is easily treatable) they will advise you to see your GP. Good luck,

Angie (skin cancer patient since 2009)

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I’ve had 3 BCC’s in the past and had them removed, however I’m not too sure that the ‘Marks’ on my arms are the same. I will take your advice though and call in at my local pharmacy. In all honesty I think they will say to consult my GP as they are not too helpful. Thanks again.
