Acral Melanoma - is it aggressive?

First time posting.
My husband (44) has been suffering with weight loss - a stone in 2 months - and fatigue. He noticed the freckle he’s had for years between his toes has grown, doesn’t have clear borders, and has different textures and colours.
He saw the GP last week and has been referred to a dermatologist but has been told the wait is 6 weeks. The gp said it looked ‘worrying’ and has ordered a blood tests and stool sample.

If this is Acral Melanoma, will a 6 week wait be serious? I keep reading that this type is super aggressive and I’m worried sick.

Any advice or anecdotal stories would be great. We’re North West. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

Acral melanoma isn't common so you may not receive many replies on here. It can be aggressive & a delay to be seen isn't preferable. I suggest you ask your GP if there is another hospital that has a shorter waiting list (most hospitals are seeing 2 week referral patients within 4 weeks). Other options are, if you can afford to, pay for a private consultation with a dermatologist but please be aware that they too have a longer waiting time although not as long as 6 weeks. If they think it needs removing for a biopsy your husband can then be transferred back under the NHS. The final option is to wait for the appointment letter & then ring dermatology & say he is happy to take a last minute appointment (if one comes up & he can drop everything at a few hours notice).

Hopefully, because acral mm is rare, the cause of your husband's health symptoms aren't due to this. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
