Urgent referral?

My husband had had severe diarrhoea for 2 months. Can't work etc. No other symptom. Positive FIT test. GP referral seems not to be urgent as letter from Colorectal clinic is a standard 'your referral will be looked at' letter and not an appointment with a specialist within 2 weeks. No time frame.Should we be chasing this and putting pressure on the GP? What makes a referral 'urgent'? Thanks for looking.

  • Hello Dottie-Hero

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's ongoing health issue. It sounds like it's really impacting his daily life and I can understand that you want to get to the root cause of this problem as quickly as possible.

Did the GP say that they were going to send the referral as urgent? There will be referral criteria used to assess all referrals so this may be just a letter to confirm receipt of the referral. There's certainly no harm in getting in touch with the hospital to see if your husband's referral has been looked at and when you may expect to hear about an appointment date.

I do hope that he doesn't have to wait too long and that the team can improve things for him soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn, thanks for your message. My husband contacted our G.P. who confirmed that the referral was urgent and since then, he has been offered an appointment for a colonoscopy next week, and has collected all the gubbins which goes with the procedure, which is great news. Best wishes, DH.
