Upper GI Referral - Hyperdense Lesion near Duodenum

Hello,

I have recently had a fast track referral for suspected upper GI cancer because a 4.3cm Hyperdense Lesion was found on my CT Scan.
They said on the phone after my referral that the Lesion is inseparable from the Duodenum.

They had the MDT meeting today and I have been given an appointment to see an Upper GI Consultant on the 7th of May. It says speciality "Surgery".
I have no idea if this wait time is normal or if the long wait makes it less likely to be Malignant.
They said they are unable to tell me anything until the appointment.

Does this mean they think the Lesion is cancerous or not?

Has anyone here been through similar?

Many thanks,
S

  • Hello Shsutter1

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some health concerns and that you're now waiting for an appointment with the specialist on the 7th of May.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult. The length of time between the MDT and your appointment with the Consultant is about normal for people to wait as is the fact that the appointment says surgery. Whilst you may or may not need an operation, the specialty that the Upper GO Consultant sits under will be surgery as opposed to say medicine, ENT, or orthopaedics. It's something that we often get people posting about but try not to worry at this point.

If you think it may help to talk things through with one of our nurses ahead of your appointment you're welcome to call them. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and information they can along with helping you think about any questions you might want to ask the specialist. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pmk on 0808 800 4040.

Do keep in touch Shutter1 and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Jenn,

Thank you so much, hearing that Surgeon is the standard speciality is reassuring.

Would they book this appointment even if the Hyperdense Lesion is nothing to worry about or are they likely to do further tests?

I have no idea what to expect.

    Kind regards,

    Shutter x

  • Hi Shutter,

I am not sure to be honest, it's hard to know really but it sounds like you will find out a lot more during the appointment as to whether further tests are needed. I can imagine it's a  worrying time for you not knowing what to expect and as Jenn said, don't hesitate to ring our nurses to talk things through by ringing the number she provided above.

Best of luck for your appointment on the 7th May - I hope it all goes well for you!

  • Hello Lucie,
So sorry to bother you again.
I had a text message confirming my hospital appointment, it says "Dear "Name", this text is to remind you of your appointment with our SURGERY team at "Hospital name" on 07/05/2024."
Is this still standard for a face-to-face with a consultant? Or could this mean I may need surgery?

The waiting is driving me insane and I've never experienced this before.

    Many thanks again,
    Shutter x

  • Hello Shutter,

You are not bothering me in the slightest but I must confess I don't really have the expertise to tell you what it may mean. I am not sure whether it necessarily means surgery or is just the standard in your hospital for a face-to-face appointment with a consultant. It may be worth ringing the hospital and asking them more information about this to give you a bit of peace of mind while you are waiting. Just 6 days to wait now though I can imagine every single day that passes feels like a lifetime. As my colleague Jenn mentioned in her post just above, feel free to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be able to tell you more about this text message you received and what it might mean. They're very friendly and helpful so don't hesitate!

The waiting is really hard as you said and I thought I would share with you our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for news.

Let us know if you get a chance how the appointment goes on the 7th!
