Positive FIT test.

Evening all,

My Grandma (64) had a FIT test come back positive with a reading of >400. She was referred for an urgent colonoscopy, which is currently at a 2 week wait with NHS.

Symptoms of loose mucousy stools, upset stomach, and increased need to empty bowels started a couple years, but GP has been advising her it's IBS and food intolerances; he gave her Buscopan and told her to change up her diet. She took the advice, and the episodes seemed to remit here and there, but recently it's been back with a vegenance. She has diarrhea frequently for the last couple of months, and now has had a bit of bright red blood in stools a few times. GP got her to do a FIT test when she told him about the blood and persistent diarrhea, and the results were as mentioned above. She has no weight loss or loss of appetite and is generally 'well' otherwise, but she says she has some days were she feels 'off' (fatigued, abnormally warm, and just overall 'meh'), but other days where she feels absolutely fine and fit.

She is in good spirits -- though I suspect just putting on a brave face -- but I am so nervous! Of course, I'm reassuring her and telling her to not worry and just wait for the colonoscopy, but my anxiety is through the roof. The FIT reading and symptoms are absolutely indicative of *something* being amiss, and now we just have to hope it's something less malicious than cancer. She had a half-sister through her Mother who had sadly bassed from a 10+ year battle with bowel cancer many, many, years ago so the worry is on even more - even though nobody else in the family has ever had it, and it's not known if anyone on her half-sisters paternal side had it either. Either way, it's making me panic even more knowing there is even just a small potentially familial link. My Grandma is everything to me; I can't lose her now.

I've read a handful of posts on here of people in the same boat, re: very elevated FIT test numbers, but few people posting follow-up updates -- which honestly makes me think they were probably cancer-free, which is good - but I suppose I'm just looking for some confirmation bias in the interim between now and the colonoscopy. Sigh. I have no one else to really share with, and obviously I have to keep positive for my Grandma, which is why I'm posting here.

Will post updates whatever happens after colonoscopy.

  • Hi. Just seen your post. Husband just had colonoscopy. FIT was 90. Blood in stools and constipation. Got the all clear. Found a small polyp and haemorrhoids. Anxiety has been through the roof these last 3 weeks. It's not always bad. Try to stay positive and please keep in touch on here to let us know how you get on.

  • Thanks for the reply.

Happy to hear your husbands colonscopy showed no malignancy, that is good to know. Will definitely update with whatever happens.

  • Update for anyone currently following, or who finds this in the future because they or a loved one is in the same situation: she received a phone call today arranging inital phone assessment and the colonoscopy -- 2 days after initial results discussion.

Phone assessment scheduled for 29th April, and colonscopy scheduled is scheduled for 5th May -- prep collection scheduled for 4 days before. So, the colonoscopy will be almost exactly two weeks since the initial results to discuss; NHS have been able to adhere to their time-frame for us -- nice going, NHS.

I am nervous as f* and still browsing these threads compulsively for reassurance. My Grandma seems externally more relaxed than me and just going about her regular life and responsibilities, though internally she is probably going through it. Grrr, wish this wasn't happening, but alas. Here's to hoping it's nothing too serious!

  • Hi. My husband just went through the exact same thing. He's only 46. 2 week referral following positive FIT at 90. Had his colonoscopy on Monday and nothing sinister going on. It really is such a worrying time going through something like this. I wish your Grandma the best of luck and will keep fingers crossed that all is OK.

  • Apologies. I've commented on so many posts that I can't keep track. Just noticed that I already posted a comment to you on Monday.

  • No worries at all. Yes, I've seen your posts on here, and I appreciate you for sharing the journey and updating. I am so glad your husband was okay. You know the anxiety of the worry in between being told FIT test results and colonoscopy, so I am sure you can share my feelings.

  • Thank you. In situations like this it's good to share and it's amazing that there are communities such as this where you can express your fears and ask for advice/reassurance. I've been lucky really. Never had cancer in my family...until 2 years ago when my Aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer. Had a mastectomy and some of her other breast taken too. Had treatment and was given the all clear. In January, she had some symptoms and was taken to hospital. All we know now is that she has cancer again. We dont know where or how bad because she won't tell anyone and we respect that. If she wants to tell people, she will do when she is ready. Doesn't look great though. Then, last September, my mum was diagnosed with the same thing. Surgery isn't an option because she is 82 and not strong enough. She is taking anastrazole which has been successful so far. Tumour has halved in size so all good for now. I've always feared it but to see my husband go through this recent scare has messed with my head big time. He's my soul mate and the thought of him ever getting cancer would be devastating. We've been together since I was 16 (I'm 45 now) and I want him around for a long long time. x
