Positive fit test

Hi,

im 40 years old and female and jsut recieved a positive fit test with the score 20.  I have been passing either wee balls of poo or massive big ones, I also have a feeling of something going back up when I poo.  I went to the doc and she examined me and said it looks like an internal hemerroid and she give me a sample pot.  I don’t have any bleeding and a wee bit of white mucous so it’s come back positive and I’m being sent for a colonoscopy asap.  I’m so worried I have health anxiety so it’s making me freak out.  I do have other health issues going on I’ve really bad back pain so I’m convinced I have cancer and it’s advanced and in my back and I’m going to die.  I had a baby last year and I’m scared to leave my kids.  Whilst I was pregnant I was having stomach issues so I’m worried it’s been going on since pregnancy.  I’m so totally freaked out.

  • It's unlikely to be cancer. When I was 40, I had rectal bleeding, weight loss, trapped wind and occasional loose stools (maybe once a week) and the consultant said that at my age, cancer was possible but unlikely and I'd be "the most unlucky person in the world" if that was the explanation." It turned out to be hemorrhoids, as we all suspected.

Your FIT score is also really only barely positive (some people get scores of 100s) which would be consistent with hemorrhoids, as would a recent pregnancy.

It would be quite unlikely that you would get bowel cancer at 40 and that it would start showing symptoms just at the time of your pregnancy and that the FIT test would still be fairly low AND that the doctor would think it looked like hemorrhoids. In my case, I was told it didn't look like I had any hemorrhoids which really freaked me our.

Everything here sounds consistent with hemorrhoids so hopefully that will be the explanation.

  • May I ask, what is a FIT test?

  • It's a test of your poo to see if there is blood in it. A result over 10 means they have found blood.
