Colonoscopy

Hello. I am a 75 year old female who has been suffering extreme constipation for a couple of months. My doctor examined me and said my bowels were 'hard as rock' and gave me suppositories for 5 days followed by an enema. He blamed this on codeine tablets which I have been taking for back pain. When I visited the doctor again he said the bowel had cleared, but asked to do a FIT test to make sure. This was done on Monday and on Wednesday yesterday)  he rang me to the say the test had been positive for blood and that I would need a colonoscopy 'fairly soon'. This was a shock as I have never seen any blood in my poo or anywhere else and I am now scared about bowel cancer. Even though the doctor said I was no longer constipated I still don't seem to be going to the toilet normally. I can't seem to settle my mind and everything keeps going round and round in my head and can't sleep. I know no-one can help me until I have the procedure, but I am really scared.

  • Hi. My husband is going for a colonoscopy on Monday. Absolutely terrified of them finding cancer. He had a positive FIT test after having blood in his stools so has been referred via the 2 week pathway. He has collected his prep stuff today. He is dreading the procedure but is trying not to think much past that at the moment. I'm so worried and scared for him. If he gets told he has cancer, we will be devastated.
