Awaiting breast biopsy results

Hi everyone

I’m 56 and had discomfort:pain in my left breast so visited my GP she found a 3cm lump.  Went to breast clinic, had mammogram, consultant said nothing present, went home, was called the next day to be asked to come in for ultrasound, 1week wait, as soon as the sonographer put the ultrasound thing on there it was, a dark mass, she did a biopsy, took 3 samples, and popped in a marker.  I’m getting my results on Thursday and I’m like a cat on hot bricks. I’m not so bothered about me I’m more bothered about how my husband and children will react if it is C

my question is, if it was clear wouldn’t they just send me a letter to say all is fine and you are discharged or do they call all biopsy patients in to discuss the results.  I just want to be put out of my misery x

  • Hi Jobean

i think im In a similar situation to you - I’ve been asked to go back into the breast clinic this Friday to get my results which automatically makes me think that the news isn’t going to be great. I was thinking about calling my gp tomorrow to see if the results were available to see but if they say they can’t tell me over the phone it’ll just make me worry even more!
it’s the not knowing, I just want to know what’s happening so I can make a plan but also, the thought of going into my appointment fills me with dread x

  • I think it’s the not knowing, it’s almost like torture

im not sure what the procedure is re the letters, surely it would save them money to just write to you and say everything is fine or am I just being a doomsayer. I’m quite an upbeat person but this has got me x

  • I have been today for two biopsies and cells removing from under my armpit. I have to wait two weeks for results. Breast cancer nurse spoke to me and my partner while there and asked me to consider which hospital i wished to have treatment at...giving me a list of relevant ones and let them no when i come back for the results. Guess i have it then before the results come back. Work situation was discussed. Medication allergies. Told i could call with any questions

  • I hear you - I’m usually pretty upbeat too but this is the most anxious I’ve felt and I just can’t seem to get my head straight. Some days are better than others and I can almost forget for an hour or two and then I remember and it hits me like a tonne of bricks!

maybe they prefer to do all results face to face to eliminate further worry due to receiving/not receiving a letter in the post? Really not sure x

  • Bless you,  sending big hugs x

Let’s meet each other updated x

  • Hi Jobean,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Most surgeons prefer to give any results, irrespective of the outcome, face to face. However, in some very busy clinics, results sometimes have to be given by letter or phone. This usually leaves us playing out all sorts of scenarios in our heads and our imaginations going into overdrive.

Not all lumps turn out to be cancerous. Many are benign cysts, fibroadenoma or due to hormonal changes. I sincerely hope that this may turn out to be the outcome of your results.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Bumble-Bee,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Most surgeons do tend to prefer to give results in person, irrespective of the outcome. This is always a worrying wait and, even if all turns out well, there are often questions that the patient wants to discuss. I shall be thinking of you on Friday and hoping for good news.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hey did you ring your GP today?
    x

  • Hey Jobean,

I did, yes, but there weren’t any results showing on the system yet apparently. They said that it’s best to stick to my appointment on Friday so they can talk to me in person. How are you holding up? Got my fingers crossed for you tomorrow x
