Understanding when my mum might get a prognosis

My mum has recently been told she is likely to have lung cancer and is undergoing tests. My dad is currently away abroad and my mum has a follow-up after her endoscopy next week. My mum has been a bit careful about what she tells us, but I believe she has so far had a CT scan but not yet had a pet scan I would like to know whether she is likely to receive a prognosis or any potentially life altering news at the endoscopy follow-up session so I can ensure that my Dad is there to support. Would anyone be able to advise what the process usually is for providing a prognosis on the severity of the cancer and any potential life expectancy? Is she likely to be told anything significant and potentially upsetting at this endoscopy follow-up?

  • Hi Colin and welcome to the Cancer Chat forum.

Hopefully some of our members who have had similar tests and follow ups will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but if you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to answer your questions and help you figure out what may happen at her appointment.

I can't begin to imagine how stressful and worrying this must be, but I hope you can take some strength, and comfort, from knowing that our community are here for you and wishing your mum all the best for next week.

    Kind regards,
