Concerns I have throat cancer

Hi, I'm hoping for reassurance and also other similar stories of symptoms as I'm currently worrying about what I may have.

In November I lost my voice for a two weeks, I had to be signed off work as unable to converse with service users. My job involves talking to people all day. I was told to rest my voice. No other symptoms. I was diagnosed with laryngitis by a GP , as i squeaked  at him over the phone. In January I lost my voice again for 4 days, this time i just rearranged my work diary so no talking needed.

February came, I started to get a sore throat, swollen gland on left side and hoarseness to voice, this lasted several weeks but came and went.By the beginning of March it was getting more persistent, resulting in my voice nearly disappearing at the end of each working day so I called my GP mid March who wrote me up for antibiotics for 10 days, but to carry on working.

By the beginning of April along with the hoarseness, sore throat, and swollen gland, I developed a dry cough, sore tongue and ear pain, all of which were only on my left side.

I called my GP he has signed me off work for 4 weeks and sent iff an urgent ENT referral to the hospital.i have spoken to them re waiting times, they couldn't tell me when at present. My husband has private health insurance so we have left a message with ENT secretary to get an appointment.

I'm now starting to worry as my symptoms don't appear to be improving with rest and time off work.

I now have little to no appetite,l due to my symptoms.  I'm tired, sleep so much where normally I'm awake early and active. I'm popping pain killers as throat and neck painful is too much at times.

I keep thinking I'm over reacting and it's just laryngitis, nowever why is it not getting better?

It's this similar or the same for anyone else,  if so what was your diagnosis.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi sjonny001,

I'm sorry to hear you've been experiencing these difficulties. It's good that you now have the referral, as this will mean you should get the answers you need - and I hope it's not too long to wait for this.

It's difficult to advise on this as only the medical team will be able to do so, after any potentially necessary tests. However if others here have similar experience to share then hopefully you'll get some more replies soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
