22 and breast biopsy results delayed by 2 weeks - just before exams. I don't know what to do.

So 4 weeks ago I found a large irregular lump in my breast, which appeared seemingly out of nowhere. A GP referred me to breast clinic via USC pathway. Had an ultrasound and the radiologist was not sure and decided to do two biopsies - no cancer was mentioned - but she did mention Phyllodes tumour? I'm a wreck. I got my things ready today and received the call that my results will be delayed a further two weeks - so just a few days before an important exam I have in medical school. I've been a nervous wreck for the past week, seeking reassurance - at one point I was certain I had cancer. I was hoping this would all be over after today? Is this common? The nurse said the pathology labs were running behind. I can't focus, finding it hard to think of anything else.

  • Hello apjapj02

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some concerns about your breast health and that you're now subsequently waiting for biopsy results. It's perfectly understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for there to be delays in results being returned. We know that for many people this period of waiting for results and uncertainty can be difficult more so when you don't receive results as expected. Try to keep in mind that the majority of people seen in breast clinics are not diagnosed with cancer.

I don't know how long a period your exams are spread out over but if you think it may help to delay your results until after your exams then you can always get in touch with the breast care nurse and ask to delay the appointment.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that the results bring you reassurance and wish you well with your upcoming exams.

    Best wishes,
