Lymph nodes - Stressed and confused because of delays/no diagnosis

Hi everyone and thank you all for taking part in these discussions, reading them was the number one thing that helped me keep my sanity over the last two months.

Two months ago I discovered a growing lump on the side of my neck a bit under my ear, first pea size, now almost 5cm - visible if I tilt my head, and hard when you touch it. No pain and no other symptoms. I did realise I had lost a couple of kilos at the time without trying, but it could be a coincidence, I've since put them back.

I've been to 2 GP appointments, 1 ENT appointment (where they examined me and said lymphoma was a possibility), 1 ultrasound, all with 2-3 weeks in between them, and my ENT ultrasound follow-up appointment was cancelled so I had to chase them to get it back again, this time scheduled in May, 3 weeks later.

The ultrasound showed 'no abnormal cells' so they decided on the spot a biopsy was not needed. That was good news obviously, at the time, but the lump is still there and I don't know what to do. It's hard, unchanged, and I have no other symptoms. It's been extremely stressful and it's hard to focus on anything else.

My questions for you are:

Could the ultrasound be wrong or have missed something? Should I try a private scan/biopsy for a second opinion?

If it's indeed not 'abnormal cells' or lymphoma, what else could it be? I never had anything like this before, I don't know what to think.

  • Hello!

I am currently waiting an ultrasound but I had a scan about 9 years ago on a neck lump they never biopsied it and it is still there now. It has got somewhat bigger and a bit harder so will have it rechecked when my appointment comes through. I always wondered why they didn’t biopsy at the time just in case but never pushed it as I believe they can tell by the appearance of it if it is anything concerning. They will be able to tell you more at the follow up but would be reassured they didn’t see anything on the ultrasound.

  • Thank you so much for you reply, it's reassuring.

9 years ago?! Wow, that's a long time. You didn't mean 9 months ago? :) But it is helpful to realise that this kind of thing can last a long time, so I appreciate your reply.

  • Nope haha 2015! It’s still there now gone slightly harder but I did have glandular fever they said sometimes they can become permanently enlarged and remain like that he told me I basically had a fat lymph node. Got my ultrasound Monday so will update you if anything different from before.

  • Yes, please do, and I hope it's good news. Thank you again!

  • Hi Kas90, I had my ultrasound like you they noted they were large but could not see any abnormal features she asked if I had been ill recently but I haven’t been and said if the one on my thyroid keeps getting bigger I need to go back to doctors! The oncologist I saw said he would call in four weeks once all tests are done, he said possibility of ct scan originally but I doubt he will request one now that my ultrasound was clear, Although good news I’m still a bit like you worried something may have been missed and they’ve come out of no where and my thyroid one has trip in size over the past 6 weeks, I am waiting for blood tests which should be able to give more information but my tests back in February besides a few deficiency’s were relatively normal. I have lost quite a bit of weight over three months without trying so all very strange but doesn’t seem like I will have a definite answer. Let me know if you have any more updates.
