Surgery in Sigmoid Colon?

Hi all

In brief - After I was diagnosed with significant iron deficiency anaemia (3) on 22/12/23 & sent for an immediate iron transfusion and then referred on 2ww pathway to colorectal team after a relatively low positive FIT test. (22)

A large polyp(35mm) was removed from Sigmoid area during colonoscopy which (seemingly to the surprise of the Medics) turned out to be cancerous on biopsy.

Have now been informed that they can’t be certain to have left enough of a margin of healthy tissue in the colon and so have been invited to discuss sigmoid colon surgery vs ongoing surveillance

Im 63F and am otherwise healthy & active.

Has anyone else faced this decision and can give any advice on reality of potential cons of such surgery. I’m particularly bothered about lifestyle implications if I end up with any loss of control of bowel movements etc

Thank you

  • Welcome to the forum April although I'm sorry to hear the polyp that was removed during your colonoscopy turned out to be cancerous.

Hopefully some of our members who have had sigmoid colon surgery will share their experiences and advice with you soon, but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They are very insightful and will do all they can to help.

I hope you're able to get all the information you need so you can make the decision that's right for you.

    Kind regards,
