Dr says it's very unlikely to be myeloma - worried

My mum saw a gp yesterday, as she's post menopausal and has got vaginal atrophy. They gave her some cream for it. She happened to mention that she gets night sweats....but this is really just a bit clammy on her lower back, top of buttocks area. The Dr examined her and said she had a bit of dry skin in that area, so prescribed some cream for it.

She noticed my mum has a boney lump at the bottom of her spine. Now my mum was born 6 weeks premature, and has always had a bit of extra tailbone. No doctor has ever noticed it, as there's been no reason to look.

The Dr wants to get an xray of this.

The Dr then casually mentioned that one cause of night sweats is a cancer called myeloma. She is testing my mum for it...bloods and urine.

She said it's very unlikely that it is that, but they have to investigate night sweats.

We thought it was to do with low estrogen...and now we're very worried.

Is the Dr just ruling out the least likely cause?

It's very scary...especially for someone who already worries greatly

There are no other symptoms to suggest she has cancer of any sort.

  • Welcome to the forum BSpider although I'm sorry to hear your mum has been referred for some tests.

I know this must be a scary time, but I hope you can take some strength, and comfort, from knowing that many of our members have been in a similar position, so you are not alone, and hopefully you will receive some support and advice from them soon.

We're thinking of you BSpider and will have our fingers crossed your mum's x-ray and test results bring good news when they come through.

    Best wishes to you both,
