Inconclusive biopsy results

Hi all,

I've recently beeen through an urgent referral to ENT, due to large lump on my neck and other symptoms.

2 weeks ago i had an endoscopy,  core biopsy and FNA biopsy. During my appointment the consultant had said i could have something called a branchial cleft cyst.

I had another appointment made for end of April, but then jad to chase for my biospy results for three days after i knew they were back.

To then have a really disappointing call with the consultant who said my results are inconclusive..and that it didnt look 'too worrysome' I dont really understand the value in what she said. What does that actually mean?? Its left me with more questions than answers.

She said i might now have to go through getting another set of biospies being done. My fatigue is worsening. The lump is getting larger and I have to wait now till end of April to see them again

Haa anyone else experienced this? Am i being silly? Should i not be concerned?

Im just struggling with this so badly and could do with some reassurance or advice.

  • Hi Lola1080,

I completely understand why you have been left confused with more questions than answers following this phone call with the consultant. Being given inconclusive results can leave you feeling rather anxious as you were looking for clarity and peace of mind. I think you need some answers right now on how best to proceed and if you feel waiting until end of April is way too long, I would suggest you try and seek a second opinion and talk about your options with another specialist. Or simply ring back the GP and explain your concerns - perhaps they will be able to help speed things up.

Best of luck and everything crossed for you that this gets sorted once and for all very soon,

  • Thanks Lucie, appreciate the reply. My bloods all came back normal. But im 43 and I know my body. Something is up. It could quite easily  e my age and some of my symptoms could be down to peri menopause.  But I've been on HRT mow for over 6 weeks and seeing no improvement.  Ill hamg tight for now and wait for the next appointment on 22nd April. I realise from this forum, that the waiting is the worst,  and part of me feels im probably being unreasonable,  the consultant can't tell me when the biopsy hasnt yielded the results needed I guess! Ive waited almost 7 weeks since this lump appeared.  I can wait another 3.
