Lump left side of neck…

Hi, I’m not sure if I will actually post this but I’m feeing let down, confused and a little abandoned by my GP. Here goes… the middle of last year I went to see my GP after horrendous night sweats started, I wake up drenched, not every night but more nights than not, that along with feeling exhausted all the time, no amount of sleep and rest seemed to help, the GP checked my hormone levels and said she was checking to see if I was possibly in Perimenopause (I’m 37 so came as a shock) blood tests results came back in a text to say my Vit D was low, fast forward to Jan 24 and after struggling with another cold/cough for over a month, awful back pain, rib pain, I can’t quite tell, saw the GP again as I am struggling with the pain, she said I had a chest infection and gave me antibiotics, told me to come back if it didn’t clear up… at this point I feel like a burden to the docs… I held off going back, still having the pains in my back until last week when my husband insisted, I agreed but had left left out to him that I had found a lump above my left collar bone, the size of a marble, not painful, just a shock to find. I spoke to the doctor last Friday 15th March,  told her I was still struggling and just didn’t feel right, told her about the lump, she said it’s a little over 1cm, she said she needed me to come in for blood tests on Tuesday 19th March, blood test text came back saying all normal apart from low Iron levels and slightly raised inflammation markers, pick some antibiotics up from the practice they are waiting.
when I tried to call to ask about the lump I was told the doctor is now on holiday and I can book an appointment after the 3rd April…

what do I do?? Something doesn’t feel right but I feel like I’m back at square one with antibiotics that don’t seem to be doing anything , I’m scared the lump along with my other symptoms is something more serious.

  • Hi, I had lymphoma in my neck, the lump usually manifests itself by growing outwards but mine grew inwards, went undetected for three months having been mis-diagnosed and treated as TB and of course I grew steadily worse and admitted to hospital three times. Eventually correct diagnosis arrived at, had chemotherapy, etc. I had a recurrence 16 years later, my GP didn't agree with me said I was imagining it, but I went back two months later insistent that it was active again and she agreed to send me for an ultrasound scan. Even the Consultant Radiographer said he didn't think there was anything there, but on performing the scan admitted that I was right and treatment was instigated once again.

I think you need another talk with a GP, can you see a different one at your Surgery if you don't feel you are getting anywhere. Ask for an ultrasound scan and ask for the actual blood test results, an actual printed copy of them, you are entitled to. You need to look at the ESR and CA.125 and another blood test would be good for comparison. If they are rising then your doctor needs to think again and not rely on antibiotics. Do research on the internet, make notes of what you discover and write down questions for your doctor at an appointment and don't be afraid to ask them.

i would urge you to be calm and not be scared by this development. Our bodies are masterpieces of engineering but they do have problems that need sorting. A positive approach is really helpful and as I said look into it and read up everything you can find with your particular symptoms. You obviously feel something is going on so don't ignore it, face it. Doctors cannot know everything and sometimes need a nudge in the right direction but discretion is required so that you keep your doctor on your side!

I hope you soon find the answer to what is yours ur medical problem.

  • Sorry to jump in.  Linda I just wondered where your lymphoma lump(s) displayed and what they felt like?

I have been referred as suspected, but I have not had US yet, that is next Thursday.

    Thank you x

  • Katie, that does not sound right and I hope you can get some answers soon for your own peace of mind x

  • Thanks for the message, I have been back to the doctors this morning, a different doctor, she was lovely, did a thorough exam on my top half, said the lump is at 2cm but she doesn’t feel overly concerned about it as she can move it. She has referred me for a US given my other symptoms so should get an app through within the next 2 weeks, more to rule out anything nasty than confirm. She really did put my mind at ease.

  • Sorry to jump in but I just wanted to say how important it is to PERSUE things.

So pleased that you got to see a different doctor and now have an ultrasound on the horizon.

    Best wishes.

  • Hi Jessica, my symptoms presented as swellings beneath the jawline on both sides and my blood tests were all over the place. But I did not get the usual lump developing at the base of the neck where it meets the shoulder. Mine grew inwards instead, I had coughing fits, had great difficulty speaking and had to avoid certain foods - bread nearly choked me and I needed liquids like soups and stews.

Hope all goes well on Thursday.

  • sounds like things are moving in the right direction and you have a doctor who understands, great stuff!

  • Hi, how did your US go?

    my US is next Wednesday

  • I had my ENT appointment on 28th, but they didnt do an US there :(

I have another appointment for an US and biopsy on my right side on 10 April, same day as yours!   I did not realise until the appointment but my thyroid is also slightly enlarged on the right side too aswell as the enlarged lymph node.  I also noticed a lump yesterday above where your adams apple would be but slighlty to the right.  I dont even know what that could be......... defo something going on somewhere x
