Kidney cancer no nearer a diagnosis

My husband and I waited in the consultants clinic last week . Unfortunately after two and a half hours of waiting and not being informed we were told that our appointment was cancelled. I was devastated. I have been told that there will be a multidisciplinary meeting tomorrow and they will decide what to do then. I will have another clinic appointment within two weeks. This is a new two weeks and not within the original cancer pathway. I am beginning to guess what my treatment will be a combination of surgery and possibly radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

  • I know that there was a multidisciplinary meeting today about my case. I have to wait for another clinic appointment. Every day I have waves of anxiety and depression and panic. If only someone could tell me what is wrong and and decide what they are going to do about it.

I’m really depressed. The bookings secretary has said that it may take up to two weeks to get the findings of the MDT. I might get called back to clinic. Previously said I will get a new Urology appointment. Does this mean the findings are not important ? Have informed my GP but her day off today,

  • I'm so sorry to hear what has happened EJ7861 and that the bookings secretary said it take up to another 2 weeks to get the findings from the MDT meeting.

This must be incredibly frustrating but we are sending all our support your way and hope it can give you some comfort at this very difficult time.

I hope some of our members will offer their support and advice to you soon but if you want to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, do be sure to give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're here for you EJ7861 and hope you're able to find out your treatment plan soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi EJ7861, this is in many ways the most stressful part of things when you are waiting to find out what the plan is for treatment.

Kidney cancer is generally slow growing, so that might reassure a bit.

When you have your meeting with the urology consultant you will probably also meet your cancer specialist nurse.

Definitely worth talking to your GP, I was put on an antidepressant to help with the sleep probs and anxiety (I have had issues in the past with depression)

The one thing that I did find really helpful was signing up to an exercise class, it was organised through Macmillan for people awaiting cancer surgery/treatment and was prehabilitation before surgery and rehabilitation after I was well enough to resume after surgery.

It made me feel like I was doing something positive towards beating it and I have no doubt helped me recover faster.

It might be worth asking if something similar is available

Hope everything goes well for you

  • Thank you for your helpful post. I am already taking anti depressants. I am also having reflexology which helps with the anxiety. The waiting is horrible. I might need another chat with the GP. Thank you once sgain

I’m still waiting to hear from MDT but I know they have met so hopefully they will have sorted out a treatment plan for me. It is the waiting that is the worse part. I think that it is nearly three weeks as we had to go back on the two week wait after the MDT.

  • Not sure my experience helps but I had a malignant tumour in my left kidney two years ago. I was diagnosed and operated on within 2 months (Switzerland). Possibly I was fortunate that they only had to remove part of a kidney where the tumour was located. Despite the same fears as yourself, I did not take anti-depressants and avoided painkillers post operation. Best support I have is family. Stay strong, I feel you will be fine.

  • Thank you Frederick I think the tumours are quite small so one could possibly benign. They just don’t know. There was talk of a biopsy but that seems to be forgotten about. We have a private appointment with the same consultant on 10th April so I have that if nothing happens with the NHS. I definitely feel forgotten about. It is ten days since the MDT meeting.
