Breast cancer worry

Hello,

I have had swelling in my left breast for 3 weeks and also a small red bump on my left nipple which has got bigger over the past 3 weeks. Doctors haven’t found any lumps but I have been referred to my local breast clinic awaiting appointment.
I have also been feeling very out of sorts, forgetting things and feeling confused about everyday things like what to eat, or trying to have a normal conversation is a struggle.

could something like this be a symptom of breast cancer?

thank you

  • Hi Sbsb,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and am glad to hear that you are getting these investigated. I am not a doctor, so cannot answer your question about forgetfulness and cancer.

As someone who has had 2 bouts of breast cancer, I can only tell you that I found a lump in my breast when I was in the shower on both occasions. I had no pain, forgetfulness or confusion at the time. These can come with some forms of treatment, but not usually before. It is a fact that only 20% of people referred to the clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis. Many lumps turn out to be benign cysts, fibroadenoma or due to hormonal changes.

The 2 week wait is the normal referral protocol for any lump. Just be aware that although you may get your appointment within 2 weeks, it can sometimes be a longer wait for the actual appointment date. Most of us would agree that this is one of the most worrying times of our cancer journey. It is so difficult dealing with the unknown. Irrespective of the outcome, it becomes easier to cope with, once you get your results. Try to keep yourself busy, as this helps the time to pass.

I had a lumpectomy first time around and a double mastectomy for the second bout. That was all 14 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
