Waiting for breast clinic appointment

Hey, I’m new here, I’m reaching out because I feel like my whole world has changed overnight. I found a lump on my right breast last night, it almost felt like a muscular knot if that makes sense. Anyway, I phoned the gp this morning who saw me straight away, she said it’s definitely a hard lump, it is movable which is apparently reassuring and she reckons it’s 2cmx1cm so not huge which is good. I’m only 27 which she said is good. But all of a sudden I’ve gone from being perfectly healthy to being referred under 2ww for an ultrasound and possible biopsy. I just feel terrified.

  • Hi 27mumof2,

As someone who has had 2 bouts of breast cancer, I understand your worry. You have done well to see your GP so quickly and to get a referral. Not all lumps are cancerous and the younger you are, the less likely this is to happen. It is a fact that only 20% of people referred to the clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis. Many lumps turn out to be benign cysts, fibroadenoma or due to hormonal changes.

The 2 week wait is the normal referral protocol for any lump. Just be aware that although you may get your appointment within 2 weeks, it can sometimes be a longer wait for the actual appointment date. Most of us would agree that this is one of the most worrying times of our cancer journey. It is so difficult dealing with the unknown. Irrespective of the outcome, it becomes easier to cope with, once you know the outcome. Try to keep yourself busy, as this helps the time to pass.

I had a lumpectomy first time around and a double mastectomy for the second bout. That was all 14 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, thank you for taking time to reply to me, it’s the waiting that’s the worst part isn’t it? It’s so lovely to speak to someone who understands, I’m trying my best to keep myself distracted. I think I will feel better when I’ve got a definite date for the breast clinic. I will keep you posted on how it goes, thanks again xx

  • I’m also so pleased to hear that you’re all clear and enjoying life! Xx

  • Hi 27mumof2,

Waiting is always a worrying time. Our over-active imaginations don't help by taking us to all sorts of dark places. Try to avoid Google during your wait, as this concentrates on the more spectacular cases, won't apply to you, won't give you any answers and will only serve to scare you even further. You will certainly feel better once you have your results.

I look forward to hearing how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, I’ve definitely had my fair bout of googling, I’m putting a stop to it now because it really isn’t helping. I was looking for some reassurance but like you said it’s all spectacular cases which aren’t helping me at all. I’m going to spend the wait time doing things I enjoy and try to distract myself from things, I will keep you posted on how I get on, thank you again for replying to me xx
