Feel dismissed by gp about cervical cancer

2 years ago i went to the gp about bleeding between periods and after sex. I was treated for cervical ectropian but nothing changed. Had an ultrasound scan at the time but due to bleeding they couldnt do an internal so didnt check cervix.

After symptoms persisted i just gave up, figured that was just how it is and im stuck with it. The bleeding gradually got worse over the years with really heavy prolonged periods.

This january i noticed a very strong odour. Like id left a tampon in. Rotten meat smell. Obviously no tampon there so let the gp know. Had sti tests, bv & thrush tests all negative & a round of antibiotics inbetween just in case. Had ultrasound but yet again no scan of the cervix. Had one internal examination & nothing unusual noted. Told theres nothing to do but wait on gynaecology referal which is a 5 month wait.

So here i am with bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, changes to mensturation, lower back & abdomen pain & odourous discharge. All the signs of cervical cancer (even advanced cc) but because one dr didnt see anything on my cervix i cant get an appointment any sooner. Just to add i also havnt had a solid stool in years, bleed with passing stool & even if im constipated i cant pass anything bigger than a piece of string.

Just wanted to vent. Feeling so frustrated. The fact urgent referals are decided by one 10 second look rather than symptoms is absolutely bonkers

  • Just made a similar post about ovarian cancer symptoms honestly it's frustrating. I know my body and I know something is wrong and honestly I'm positive it's ovarian cancer but feel like my gp is just not interested. I hope you get answers soon .

  • Its horrible not being listened to. I hope you get some answers soon aswel x

  • I was diagnosed with stage 3a cervical cancer back in April 2019 after hemorrhaging. I had to wait a few weeks for a hysteroscopy but eventually got a cancellation quickly it was only at the end of the hysteroscopy that the Dr noticed something on the upper side of my cervix, she hadn't seen anything from entering the vagina side. I had very heavy periods clotting and bad odour for about 5 months before I finally got an appointment with my GP who dismissed it as being perimenopausal and told me to go to family planning for a coil! He didn't even examine me! It was only when I was at family planning the nurse there advised I needed referring to gyney due to my age I could have had fibroids. Whilst I was waiting for referral I hemorrhaged and was rushed to hospital resulting in the hysteroscopy being done.

Please ask for a referral for a hysteroscopy ASAP it's the only way you'll find out what's going on!

  • I keep thinking of your reply. I had my gynae appointment and i was absolutely stunned into silenced at the lack of interest fron the consultant. A quick look & more swabs for sti's and then most shockingly her advice about the odorous discharge was to keep a diary of what i eat!! Ridiculous. That was back in May. I never heard again from them.

After my appointment i decided to have a feel for myself in there and found an ulcer type lesion high on the side of my cervix. I kept checking it but feeling fobbed off i didnt go back to the drs about it until earlier this month. The gp had a look and couldnt see or feel it but ive an appointment on Wednesday with the gynae consultant.

I hope i have the courage to stomp my feet a bit in the appointment. Annoyingly i seem to turn into a meek little girl once im in a drs office. But surely they should do something now
