I wrote on here a few days ago about a 1cm, smooth but "fixed" breast lump in my right breast that I was urgently referred to the breast clinic to have checked. I had my appointment today after managing to get a cancellation and was extremely relieved to be told it was a milk duct. They still did a mammogram and ultrasound to be sure and I was told at the ultrasound that I had a few cysts in my right breast and one in particular that she wanted to do a Fine Needle Aspiration on to check if she could draw anything off it. I was a little bit scared at that point because she said she'd have to take another biopsy and get it looked at if she was unable to get anything out. Luckily, the second she put the needle near it, it collapsed immediately! I just wanted to share what happened to me because the reason I joined Cancer Chat was to find people in a similar situation to me and hear what their experience was like. Admittedly, I was also looking for some sort of reassurance that everything was probably ok. Obviously, the only people who can tell you that are the experts. Ultimately, what I want to say is, even if you've been urgently referred or your GP has said something that has sent you into a spin, the chances are the cause will be harmless. Over 90% of urgent breast clinic referrals turn out to be benign. Something else that I found reassuring was that apparently, on average, a GP will see only 1 or 2 women a year who get diagnosed with breast cancer. Take care of yourselves ladies! x
