AI teledermatology & possible melanoma

Hello everyone,

My Mum has had a small dark patch/bump near her thumb (top side) for years, it's never got any bigger but recently it started to scab over & has bled a couple of times when she's accidentally knocked it. She went to see a nurse who then sent her to a clinic to have an AI scan done of the bump. She received a message a couple of days ago saying the scan came back as a "possible" melanoma & will get a refferal to a dermatologist

I know now it's just a case of waiting for her to get the appointment & seeing what they say but it's obviously a shock to the system to hear these kind of things.

Has anyone else had one of these AI scans before? Would be interested to hear your experiences

Thank you in advance

  • Hello Masmai

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum has recently had some concerns about a patch of skin on her thumb. It's good to hear that she's already had her initial appointment with the dermatology service and hopefully, she won't be waiting too long before she sees the Consultant in a face-to-face appointment.

We know that many NHS trusts offer a teledermatology appointment as part of the initial diagnosis process. Hopefully, some of the members here on the forum who have been through this process will post to share their experiences with you. In the meantime, the British Association of Dermatologists has information about teledermatology on their website which you may find of interest.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can.

I do hope that your Mum has some reassuring news from the specialists soon. Let us know how she gets on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for the reply. She has a face-to-face appointment with the Dermatologist in a couple of weeks.
