Malignant melanoma? Anxious wait…

A bit of a story - but my husband noticed a mole on chest (right side) that had started to look a little different and I had to admit I had become aware (slightly itchy).  Had dermoscopy on 31st Jan at 2pm.  GP rang 9am the next morning to advise 2ww cancer pathway.  Suspected malignant melanoma.  Had NHS consultation with dermatology on 15th Feb.  We do have BUPA (lost my husbands best friend and my father last March/April to cancer which prompted us to pay for BUPA) so my husband booked as well for a private dermatologist to look at the mole.  The NHS consultant immediately (in the room for about 10 mins max) said needed to have a full excision and ASAP. However she warned wait is up to 7-8 weeks but she would put me down for cancellations and 28 day recommendation and told me to chase after 2 weeks.  She also said to keep the private appointment.  Had this 21st Feb.  He took bloods (all fine) and then referred on to another consultant- a melanoma specialist.  He also had concerns of a second mole on my coccyx.  Both lesions measured 16x9mm the chest very dark - meets the ABCDE and is scabby/broken.  New consultant contacted me the following day.  Booked for excision (and this was done) last Friday 1st March and both were taken with a 2 mm margin.  I am now awaiting the results.  The big question is should I be prepared based on 4 (including the Dr who reviewed the dermoscopy) dermatologist/consultants who seem to react quite quickly and letters and appointments where ‘further treatments’ are spoken about and being told to ‘try to take time/not stress’?  The sense of urgency is reassuring and glad they’re gone - but my husband thinks that is that but is it?  I have been told he will see me face to face next week (said results would be 7-10 days / not sure if that includes weekends?).  I am a positive person, but a realist.  Can they tell?  Do they know?  Any advice would be lovely.  Apologies for the long post!

  • Welcome to our forum, scrambles10906.

I can appreciate how concerning this situation must be for you and your husband but I'm glad to read that you've been proactive in seeking medical attention and receiving timely care, which is crucial when dealing with suspected skin cancer.

While it's difficult to speculate on the outcome without knowing the specifics of your case, the sense of urgency and the thoroughness of the consultations you've received can be seen as positive signs. The fact that multiple dermatologists and consultants have acted swiftly and have taken steps such as immediate excision and referrals to specialists indicates that they are treating the situation seriously and are working to ensure the best possible outcome for you.

It's important to stay positive but also remain realistic, as you mentioned. Waiting for results can be anxiety-inducing, but try to focus on the fact that you've taken the necessary steps to address the situation promptly. It's also a good sign that your husband will be able to accompany you for the results discussion next week, as this suggests that the medical team wants to ensure you have support and understanding during this time.

Hopefully, others who have had similar experiences will come along shortly to offer advice. That being said, if you feel like asking some questions to our team of nurses, they'd be happy to talk things over with you Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

All the best to you and your husband,

  • Thank you, Renata.  This is helpful.  It is an anxious time - but as you highlight, which is reassuring - things feel proactive which can only be a good thing.  Fingers crossed this is the end of it and the excisions are enough.  Thank you again.
